The monotonous corridor seemed to go on forever as Laura made her way down to the cell where Stefan was being incarcerated. She felt a moment of dread when she recalled what she had done, expressly going against his wishes. The young guard was friendly and smiled encouragingly at her long face as he unlocked the outer door to let her into the walkway in front of the jail cells. Laura had become accustomed to watching Stefan pace his small cell and tonight was no different. She waited outside while the guard opened the door, watching him as he walked back and forth in his surroundings, secretly admiring his trim, fit body.

Stefan turned around at the sound of the key in the lock. “Laura?”

Laura turned to the guard, “Could you leave us alone please?”

The younger man smiled. “Yeah, take as long as you want,” he chuckled, “but expect interruptions. This guy gets a lot of visitors.”

Laura watched silently until he had completely gone then turned around and gasped noticing for the first time Stefan’s bruised and bloodshot eye. “Oh, my God! What happened to you?” Her hand instinctively reached for his face. “What happened to your eye?”

Stefan impatiently waved away her hand and sympathy, eager to get on with the business at hand. “Don’t worry about it. It was just a scuffle with a couple of the guards here. Listen. Scott Baldwin was here. He was trying to get information out of me. I thought at first you had told him something then realized he was bluffing. Thank God you didn’t.”

Laura smiled sadly, “He just wants to help us.”

“He has no idea how to deal with Stavros. I am our only chance. You know that.”

Laura nodded in agreement. “I do know that. That’s why I have to break you out of here tonight.”

“You can arrange it so quickly?” Stefan inquired softly in amazement.

“I don’t have any choice in the matter. Whatever you told Alexis about putting your affairs in order has her so upset that she is going to ask for extra protection for you,” Laura complained, dropping her eyes and fidgeting.

“Listen, you tell her to come here and I’ll talk to her. I’ll placate her somehow.”

Laura lifted her eyes to his, swallowed and whispered, “I told her that Stavros was still alive.”

Stefan was stunned. “Why did you do that, Laura?”

“I had too....she...she...she was grilling me. I thought that it would make her understand why I had to break you out of jail. I also felt like she should know and be able to protect herself. I’m sorry....I....hope I didn’t make anything worse.”

Laura reached through the bars to hold Stefan hands and saw the anguish and fear there.

“Alexis is so erratic. These days I never know what she is thinking or what she is going to do. She could be in so much danger!” Stefan wretched his hands out of Laura’s and stalked his cage. “And I’m stuck in here helpless to help her!” He growled.

“It’s all my fault. I’m sorry,” Laura confessed, her blue eyes welling up with tears. “I really felt between a rock and a hard place.”

Stefan ran his hand through his thick golden hair in frustration, his mind already contemplating the problem.

The young guard came back to the outer door. “Mrs. Spencer? I’m going on dinner break. Is there anything you want? I will be gone a while and we are short-staffed tonight so there’s no one who can let you out until I return. If you need to leave, I’ll take you out now.”

Stefan was pacing his cell, oblivious to Laura and the guard. Laura eyed Stefan, knowing he was in deep thought trying to figure out a way to keep Alexis safe.

Laura smiled at the young officer. “I know it’s late and irregular but may I stay in the cell with Mr. Cassadine while you are away? We have a lot of business to attend to and it would be easier discussing it with him sitting down at the table.”

Officer Rogers hesitated for a moment then looked at Laura’s hopeful face and caved in. “You aren’t going to try and break him out while I’m gone are you?” He laughed at his joke.

Laura giggled with him. “No, not right now,” she muttered under her breath. She stood patiently as he fumbled with the keys to let her in. “Thank you,” she smiled gratefully as he let her into the cell.

“I’ll be back in about an forty-five minutes,” he advised.

Laura watched him leave then realized that Stefan was standing so close behind her she could feel the heat off his body and she shivered at the way her heart leaped.

“Leave it to you to charm one of those Neanderthals. Do you think next time you could charm him into giving you the key, or did part of Luke Spencer’s larceny rub off on you and perhaps you could steal from him?” Stefan whispered hopefully in her ear.

Laura turned and grinned at him. “Well, that depends. If he played too much football with his helmet off, I might have a chance.”

Stefan looked confused and Laura hugged him as she laughed softly. She immediately felt his body trembling with a terrible tension and pulled back looking into his eyes. “Stefan? What’s wrong? You can tell me,” Laura urged as she caressed his face, getting a better look at his eye and making a note to yell at Mac the first chance she got for police brutality.

Stefan sighed, closed his eyes and took comfort in her arms for a moment. “There is so much you don’t know, Laura,” he rasped, opening his eyes and staring down at her. “So many people are counting on me. On us. Some you don’t even know.”

Laura took him by the arms and looked deep into his eyes. “We will win, Stefan! I won’t live in fear anymore! I won’t let Helena or Stavros take my children from me!”

Stefan smiled at the fierceness in Laura. Her courage was one of the things he most admired in her. He pulled her protectively into his arms and kissed her forehead. “I will never let anyone hurt you again, least of all my mother or my brother.” Stefan buried his face into her hair and took a deep breath. It felt so good to hold her again, to feel her body next to his own. His lips pressed the top of her hair and once again he found himself wishing the impossible. Deep in his heart he knew he would always see Laura as has his only chance for happiness and a family, even if it were never to be reality. He came back down to earth swiftly. “Together we will beat Helena and Stavros,” he whispered in her ear as he dismissed his wistful dream.

He bent down to seal his promise with a kiss. His lips gently brushed Laura’s and she returned the chaste kiss. Stefan straightened and looked down at her sadly. “I could have put an end to Helena a long time ago. Instead of paralyzing her I should have killed her and then none of this would have happened. But, because I always wanted her love and approval, she was able to hurt you and your family. Chloe....,” his voice wavered for a second and he closed his eyes in haunted grief, “would still be alive. Because of me, she is dead.”

“Stefan! No!” Laura protested.

He backed out of her arms and snarled, “Yes! You left me. Nikolas hated me so when my mother concocted her plan to murder me it was a way to leave and not look back. I found out Chloe could see through her dreams what Helena was going to do so I kidnaped her and used her.” His voice was full of self-hatred. “I kept her medication from her. I didn’t care if she lived or died only how she could help me succeed in my battle against Helena. Then something happened. I fell in love with her. She always saw something good in everyone, including me. Chloe was always upbeat and so tenacious,” Stefan smiled softly in remembrance. “She was you, Laura,” he whispered. “She was the Laura I could have and keep. The one who would love ME. The one that would stay with me forever on that island and we would be happy. Then I found out she was going blind and I couldn’t let that happen so I brought her back here to her death. She was an innocent and I got her embroiled with my family knowing it was a death sentence. I’m as guilty as the one who murdered her,” Stefan cried out as a tear rolled down his face. “I couldn’t protect Chloe any better than I could you or Alexis from Stavros. And now he threatens everyone I love and I am shackled to this jail cell unable to keep any of you safe.”

“No,” Laura crooned as she cradled him in her arms. “If I had listened to you instead of Luke and a thousand other things, what might have been? We can’t change what happened, Stefan. It’s the past. You have to let it go. You haven’t had time to mourn Chloe or even let her death sink in. It’s not your fault,” Laura whispered compassionately as she rocked him in her embrace. Suddenly she was very aware of his body, to close to hers so that she felt the heat of his skin and the steady beat of his heart.

A current seemed to arc between them like a lightening bolt, sizzling and dancing until she was aching with need. The room was still and the tension in the room was palpable. Stefan’s head lifted and his gaze dropped to her mouth and her body went weak. Butterfly wings brushed at her stomach; her body clenched, and heat pooled low inside her. He bent his head to hers, his mouth finding hers in total desperation. Laura tasted his guilt, his fear for her, and his hunger. She felt his body harden, his arms tightened like iron bands around her. His mouth moved over hers like hot silk, teasing and insistent. She wanted to do nothing but relax and submit, opening her mouth so that he could take complete control, sweeping her into a world where there was nothing but feeling. It was only Stefan and Laura and pure sensation. Laura’s arms circled his neck drawing him even closer and her body melted, soft and pliant, right into his. They fit together perfectly as if they were halves of the same whole.

Stefan deepened the kiss, demanding, dominating, ruthlessly sweeping her along with the rising tide of his own passion. For once in his life Stefan ignored prudence, everything was forgotten except living in the moment. Laura followed him, needing him in a way she would never have admitted if asked, but overtaken by desire and desperation for their situation. Stefan’s hands slipped down her back to shape her waist to slide down over the curve of her rounded bottom, dragging her even closer as he pulled her over by the wall to give them as much privacy as the cell allowed. He lowered his head again, his mouth hot with need, his tongue danced and dueled with hers until she felt like she was drowning in her own desire. His fingers were busy unbuttoning her blouse and expertly snapping the closure of her bra, as hers were busy ripping his shirt from him. Her breasts swelled with desire, pushing into the muscles of his chest, straining for his touch. His body hardened even more, his hands moved over her skin, his lips teasing hers almost into a frenzy. As his mouth left hers, her head fell back, exposing the line of her throat to him. Stefan blazed a fiery trail of kisses along her soft skin, over the swell of her breasts until she ached for more. He murmured in a husky voice, an aching sound of hunger. His mouth was hot and moist, pulling strongly at her flesh, his tongue dancing over the hard peak of her nipple, his teeth scraping gently until she cried out with the sheer pleasure of it. The coolness of the air on her nipples after his hot mouth only made the sensation more erotic. His hand cupped one breast possessively, his thumb teased her sensitive nipple until her body screamed for more.

“I need you, Laura,” he whispered, his words were heat and fire.

She realized he would have stopped had she said no but all she could think about was him. He breathed into her mind and she found herself reaching for him. “I want you, Stefan.”

The rush of heat in his eyes made her body weak. His eyes were so hungry, blazing with stark, raw need. In that moment Laura realized how vulnerable he really was and how much courage it took for him to risk her rejection. She pulled his head down to hers and circled his neck with her arms molding their bodies together, taking control. His lips were firm yet velvet soft, moving over hers. Laura parted her lips and felt the familiar flames rush throughout her body as his kiss rapidly changed to hunger. “I should have moved heaven and earth to have kept you,” he growled against her lips. His hands framed her face as he touched his tongue gently to her swollen lips and reverently explored her mouth with his own. His mouth never seemed to stop as its series of long, drugging kisses made her arch against him with her own need.

Laura’s hands clutched at him hanging on for dear life as the firestorm raged around them, through them. Stefan unzipped his pants, pushing them down past his hips and reached for her hand. “Feel how much I want you, Laura,” he rasped. He wrapped her fingers around the thick, hard length of him, then closed his eyes savoring her touch. She leaned onto his chest and traced the line of his muscles with her lips. As her mouth drifted over his skin she could feel him tremble, feel him grow harder in her hand, pulse as she stroked him. Her tongue flicked out to capture a small bead of moisture on his chest and he groaned. Laura smiled, the feeling of power over him felt good. Her tongue caught another bead, swirling lazily, and elicited a gasp from deep in Stefan’s throat. Her hand moved, gliding over the hard length of him, stroking and caressing, finding the sensitive tip and butterfly soft, the tips of her nimble fingers teased him. The waves of their desire poured over them like molten lava they could barely contain. Stefan’s mouth closed over her breast and Laura purred as his tongue and teeth suckled her. Each pull set moist heat pulsing between her thighs.

Stefan stripped Laura of her pants and underwear. He touched her center and felt her push against his hand. He inserted two fingers in her and found her hot and ready for him and his control faltered. Her body moved against his hand, wanting him, craving him.

“Put your arms around my neck, Laura, and wrap your legs around my waist,” he ordered. Stefan positioned her over him. Laura could feel him pushing against her, hot, and needy. His body was trembling, rock-hard, every muscle defined. Deliberately she moved her hips, a small circling motion enticing. Inch by slow inch she took him into the heat of her body. She was tight and moist and exciting.

Stefan began to move, slow and easy keeping his savage hunger tightly under control. He buried himself deeper, a little harder, reaching to drown himself forever in her fire. He lost a little more control as her fingers clutched at him, her breasts pushed against his chest, and her blond hair spilled over him. Laura moaned softly as he pressed her back against the wall to drive more deeply into her. His hips thrust again and again, burying himself deeper into her. Stefan felt her body begin to spiral, rippling and bucking, triggering his own response, a violet explosion of ecstacy. For a moment they both thought they had ignited and gone up in flames. Stefan drew her into his arms and struggled to regain his breath, while their hearts pounded out a frantic rhythm, both of them damp and spent. Laura rested against him wondering how she had forgotten and survived without the pleasure this man always gave her. Stefan bent and brushed his mouth gently over her lips still swollen with passion. Before he could speak, they heard the sound of a door slam.

Stefan gently set Laura down and she picked up her discarded clothing and started dressing quickly. Stefan buttoned his shirt and tucked it back down into his pants. He smoothed his hair and watched as Laura did the same. They shared a look between them as the young guard opened the outer door.

“Laura?” Stefan’s voice was low and gentle, a brush of velvet heat over her skin.

Laura’s blue eyes probed him, knowing what he wanted from her. “When this is all over, we will have plenty of time, Stefan.”

Stefan took her hand and lowered his head. His lips feathered along the inside of her wrist sending flames of fire crashing through her once again. He slowly lifted his head and their eyes collided, dancing with shared secrets and passion.
