What Really Happened That Night
by Uno
A gray sky hung over Wyndemere--as it did the rest of Port Charles.
Forcing everyone inside were drops of water, which came down everywhere. None more powerful however, than the silent ones falling from Laura's eyes.
She pulled the covers closer, and rolled on her side, trying to fall asleep in a bed she wasn't used to.
*Flashback:
"...When you gave me the baby you told me you'd be back. I believed you.
...I still do."
She was silent and feeling a bit nervous.
------
Laura held her eyes closed and stirred.
*Flashback:
"I love Luke."
He nodded somewhat, "...You love Luke. But what's this I'm seeing in your eyes?"
------
Laura stirred a bit more.
*Flashback:
She turned away from him.
"No," he said, pulling her back.
She looked him in the eye.
"...Perhaps the time for me to fight is now."
------
Laura's eyes slowly opened. More wetness began to form.
*Flashback:
She seemed to move in a bit, but stopped, giving in and fighting her attraction to him at the same time.
"...The next step must be yours."
"...That's not going to happen," she said looking away.
-After a little while, she walked upstairs to take a nap, waiting for the storm to end.
------
Laura paused...then sat up. Soon however, she rested again.
Around ten minutes passed before she was able to pull the covers away and get out of the bed.
Laura paused again...then began to undo the white dress.
"...Stefan..." she called from the room.
Downstairs, Stefan Cassadine sat down the drink in his hand, and quickly moved up the steps.
"Yes," he said, opening the door and coming into the room.
He paused, staring in silence.
Laura had nearly removed the dress from her upper body, and was holding part of it in front of herself with both hands. Her shoulders were bare.
Stefan watched as her partly exposed breasts flowed with each breath.
His eyes slowly made their way up to hers.
"I...I'm sorry. I should have waited. Where's the nearest bathroom again?" asked Laura. "I was, I might take a shower if you don't mind."
"...It's right down the hall," said Stefan.
"Oh...okay that's all, thanks," she looked away slowly.
"...Have you never been to that one before?"
"No I...when we've all had dinner here...you, I, Nikolas and Lesley Lu...I've always stopped in the one downstairs."
"Yes, of course," said Stefan.
"Okay I...are there already towels and washcloths in it?"
"Yes...of course," said Stefan.
"Okay thank you," said Laura.
"But why don't we talk first..." he said gently slinging the door closed behind him, "about why I'm really here now."
"...What do you mean?" she asked with her signiture untrusting expression.
"You ah...you don't really need to shower, do you?"
"...Well maybe not.
...But where do you get an ulterior motive from that?"
"Lasha..." he said moving a bit closer, "...you summoned me because you wanted me to see you like this."
Laura looked at him with a somewhat appauled expression.
"To see you as I haven't for so long."
"I...excuse me if I needed directions...but I had no idea this would go to your head."
"Lasha..."
"Don't...don't call me that," she said softly.
"Do you want me to leave?" he asked.
"...Yes," she said looking away.
"...Then tell me," he said, beginning to remove his shirt.
"...What are you doing?" asked Laura, looking away quickly.
Stefan said nothing as he removed it completely.
Laura slowly turned back to him. She stared at his chest in silence. It had been so long since she'd seen it. Memories began coming to her.
"Tell me...by pulling yours back on," said Stefan.
"Stefan...what are you doing?" asked Laura.
"...Only what you did first," he said. "Only what we've always done.
...Acting on what's between us."
Laura was silent and still, except for her eyes...which again looked at the floor.
Stefan walked over to her slowly.
Laura looked up at his eyes.
Stefan held her arms...then sat her down on the bed.
Laura kept holding onto the dress, barely covering herself.
Stefan knelt before her. He looked her in the eye.
Laura nervously looked back...then felt his hands on her ankles, slowly moving up her lower legs.
"Stefan..." she said seriously.
"Do you want me to stop?" he asked.
Laura didn't want to accept how comforting it felt at the moment.
"Tell me," he said. "Tell me by pulling away...slapping my face."
Laura felt his hands running up her legs again. "..."
"...Lasha," he said. "As I told you...we are free to build a life."
"..."
"Why should we wait? You told me you were lonely. How much longer will we both have to wait until you embrace these feelings as well?"
"..."
"Why do you choose to suffer? Why do you choose to live in pain? To live in the past?"
"... Me?"
"That's not who or what you are. You don't wallow in pain. You don't accept misery. Not on that island...and not now."
Laura looked him in the eye.
"That's not the mature, strong, beautiful woman I know...respect... love."
A tenderness developed in Laura's eyes, followed by slow tears.
"Yes..." said Stefan, "...I love you Laura.
...Always have."
"Stefan..." said Laura weakly.
"Laura...if the events of tonight...the events on that island...and the events of...of..."
Laura looked at him in silence, almost feeling the dress escape her hands.
"If our past, present, and future mean as much to you as they do to me...if the thought of a life...with Nikolas...and Lesley Lu..."
A tear rolled down Laura's face.
"...Means as much to you as it does to me...
Laura, if you can step out of the past, step out of the pain today...and are ready to take that next step into the future, into love, with me, today...then tell me," said Stefan.
Laura closed her eyes.
Stefan had stopped moving his hands...and just held her skin.
"Laura, even in a storm such as this...I can have your belongings moved from your...from Charles street here."
Laura's eyes opened. "What are you saying, Stefan?"
"I'm saying that I can have your things moved here...once I know your heart is here."
Laura was silent.
"I'm saying that once your belongings are here...we can go and bring Lesley Lu here."
"..."
"I'm saying that my heart lies with you Laura. On the island...on those docks...and right now.
And if your heart lies with me as well...then I want it here--as well as everything else--everyday."
"Stefan..." Laura closed her eyes again and began to slowly cry.
"But you have to tell me."
"..."
"Not with words...but with your heart."
Laura sniffed, and looked at Stefan again.
Suddenly Stefan released her and stood up.
A few seconds later he returned with a pair of slippers, and knelt again.
"Lasha...if your home...if your life is on Charles Street...then tell me when you wake up."
Laura looked down at him a bit confused.
"Tell me by wearing these when you come down," he placed the slippers on the floor.
Laura looked at them...then at Stefan again.
"But if your life...if your heart..." he touched her knees "if your home...is here...then tell me.
...Walk it's floors in your bare feet...and come to me."
Laura couldn't speak.
Stefan arose. He slowly lifted Laura's hand...and gave it a gentle kiss.
Then Laura watched as Stefan walked to the door.
He turned to again her slowly...then walked out and closed the door.
The water outside began to weaken. The one inside was stronger than ever.
Later on, Stefan checked in on Laura as she slept...then exited.
Much later, Stefan entered the living room to find Nikolas and Lucky.
"...Lucky."
"Hi."
After a bit of conversation, the three heard footsteps and turned. A beautiful blonde was coming down the steps with her head facing her feet.
Suddenly, Laura looked up...and noticed both her sons standing with Stefan. A variety of emotions suddenly stirred within her.
All three looked up...as Laura slowly closed her eyes.
Later at home, Laura slowly walked over to her window and thought to herself with a serious expression.
She was unsure of what the future held for her...but at the moment...was paying a bit more attention to the past.
Far more attention.
A few hours after that, Laura closed her eyes in her own bed...and looked to the future.
-The End
