32 AMANDA SHOEMAKER, youngest daughter of John and Dolly Tomlinson was born in North Carolina in 1817 and married in 1839 to Jacob Shoemaker, a farmer, to whom were born two sons and four daughters. Those living are John M. Shoemaker of Middletown; Martha Wisehart of Pasadena, California, and Mary C. Clark of Dover, Delaware. Like her sister, Sarah Kirby, she was a woman above the average in intellect and with strong traits of character tho rather frail in body. She lived and died on a farm near Cross Roads, Delaware County, Ind. Her death occurring years ago, after which her husband and family moved to Spring Valley, southeastern Minnesota from where his children married and scattered and the home broken up and his health failing, he returned and spent his last days with his oldest daughter, Gilla A. Painter. The Shoemakers were of Pennsylvania German ancestry and were considered by all to be of the best people living in Delaware County. David, John, Jonas and Jacob were the four brothers - all leaders in every movement that advanced the best interest of their communities. May it be recorded to the honor of Wm. Shoemaker, son of Jonas, when he was a member of the Board of County Commissioners, that he resigned his office rather than sign a saloon license. That is the type of men the Shoemakers are of this family.
