33 HARBARD S. TOMLINSON born 1836, enlisted at the outbreak of the war in Co. E 19th Ind. Vol. Infantry with Sol. Meredith as colonel and Luther B. Wilson of Muncie as Capt. of Co. E. They left Indianapolis August 5, 1861 and joined the army of the Potomac. Their first battle was at Lewisville, Va. where they lost 3 (killed). They were with McDowell at Fredericksburg in March 1862 and from there up the Shenandoah valley and back to Gainsville, Va. where they lost 187, killed. From here they were at the battle of Mannassos Junction, Aug. 30, 1862, then at South Mountain where they had 40 killed. Three days later they went into the battle of Antictam ? Ind. with 200 men and came out with 37. They were at the second battle of Bull Run, Aug. 30, 1862, Fredericksburg the 12 and 13th of December 1862. The 19th Ind. was the first regiment to make the attack on the enemy at Gettysburg, Pa. 1 to 3 July 1863 where they lost 210 men out of 288. The few left veteranized and came home on furlough in the spring of 1864 and returned and took part in the battle of the Wilderness where their Colonel was killed, Samuel J. Williams. After crossing the Rapidan they took part in the siege of Petersburg, Va. where on the 18th of June, 1864 while leading his company in an assault on the rebel works, Harbard S. Tomlinson was killed. He died a brave soldier, with his face to the enemy while defending his country's flag. He was a fine looking man and leaves a record of which we all are proud.
