My Hometown
Chelsea, Oklahoma U.S.A.

Our State Flag
History:
Founded just before the turn of the 20th century, Chelsea is located in what was Indian Territory, a territory set-aside for five Native American tribes--the Cherokees, Chickasaws, Choctaws, Creeks, and Seminoles. Later after aiding the South in the American Civil War and because of demand for more land, most of Oklahoma was taken from the American Indians and opened to other Americans.

One way that land was distributed was by using landruns. For example, on September 16, 1893, a Land Run was held in Cherokee Outlet. At noon, a starting gun was used to signal "the Run," and 100,000 settlers took off to select their choice of 40,000 claims of 160 acres. Chelsea was not a part of this territory, but you can click here to read a real story about some who participated in the land run, though he wasn't from Chelsea.

For those of you who have been wondering, the term "sooner", such as in the mascot for my univerity, comes from the time period. The sooners were those settlers who went early in order to find the best land and then waited until the race began to go offically claim their property. The term "boomer" also comes from this period. It describes those settlers fortunate enough to find oil, black gold, on there land.

As for the name, Chelsea received its name from Chelsea, London. In fact a gentleman from there was present at the town's naming and gave the suggestion, which was adopted. I was also able to visit Chelsea, London while on my way to visit friends in Hartfordshire, England. (See Under the Chunnel!!! in Les Aventures de Wayne en France.)

State Song:
Oklahoma
by Rodgers and Hammerstein

Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain,
And the wavin' wheat can sure smell sweet
When the wind comes right behind the rain.
Oklahoma, ev'ry night my honey lamb and I
Sit alone and talk and watch a hawk makin' lazy circles in the sky.
We know we belong to the land
And the land we belong to is grand!
And when we say--Yeeow! A-yip-i-o-ee ay!
We're only sayin' You're doin' fine, Oklahoma!
Oklahoma--O.K.
