The Bag 'Em kids were a group of five Xs: Bullet (X6-787), Zero (X6), Bugler (X8-621), Ralph and Fixit (both X6s, one of whom is X6-809). They had met up with Alec at some point, although he had left them alone while he went off to entertain himself. While X5s can survive for about six days without food and water, and one would presume that Xs were taught how to survive in the wild, Ralph, Bullet and Zero left their position in search of something to eat. They ended up robbing a dep (taking both food and the money from the register) and left discarded junk food wrappers in their wake--(exactly the kind of training that made Manticore a force to be reckoned with, I'd imagine). The Bag 'Em kids were prepared to respond to the regroup signal which White had sent out. Though Alec told them that answering it wasn't a good idea, the kids were unable to believe that Manticore would kill them. As Bullet protested, "we're valuable military assets, representing billions of dollars in R&D." The Bag 'Em kids left and would have gotten killed had Max not arrived and saved them (but not before Bullet got shot in the leg). Max informed them that "there's been a change in your mission status--extreme and unforeseen. You've been betrayed by your own command." However, the kids had not received any training in what to do in such circumstances. Max told them that "all your training goes out the window. Starting with your blind obedience to Manticore and all it represents." "Yes ma'am," the kids replied. There were small glimmers of personal information about the kids. Sadly enough, they were some of the _better_ developed guest transgenics during the course of the second season. Ralph was one of the more developed of the Bag 'Em kids. Some scenes suggested sensitivity on Ralph's part. She was shown as being squeamish as she became ill while Bullet's wound was being cauterized. Ralph showed concern for Bullet, worrying about his injured leg, and she was the first to express guilt over leaving Max behind. However, Ralph wasn't all emotional sensitivity. Ralph showed initiative in the robbery at the depanneur, and she had no problem taking down a guard when they swept in to save Max. Bullet was also well developed, relative to the rest of the Bag 'Em kids. There were some scenes which pointed to Bullet as the group's leader. He was the one who gave the orders to move out in response to the regroup signal. Bullet wasn't overly fond of being fussed over and brushed off Ralph's concern: "I'm fine, Ralph. Would you cut it out?" Bullet retained his faith in Manticore and its teachings until being shot at--beyond his disbelief that Manticore could possibly want to kill them, Bullet also threatened to report Alec and the X7 when they made no move to respond to the signal. When Ralph expressed her Max-centered guilt, Bullet continued to rely on former chains of command. Max was of higher rank, and she had given them a direct order to leave her and escape. However, Bullet did join in on the rescue plans with no further hesitation when given a reason to disobey that order. Zero also expressed some concern about abandoning their established self-image: "but we are soldiers" he protested when Max informed them that they'd have to start thinking of themselves as people rather than soldiers. Apparently forgetting her little speech about freedom from blind obedience, Max snapped back: "you mouthing off to me? 'Cause I have zero tolerance for that. Zero! And to commemorate this special moment, that's gonna be your name--Zero" and sent the newly named X6 off for sentry duty. He didn't bring up the fact that Max was sending mixed messages all over the place. Fixit was the Bag 'Em kid's mechanic for the episode. She started off attempting to fix a radio, and when Max brought attention that that, Fixit admitted that she had always "excelled in diagnostics and repair." Max graced the girl with the name Fixit and ordered her off to repair the old pickup truck conveniently located in their hideout. Bugler was there to be cute as the youngest amongst them, and the only X8. He was part of Manticore's Bugle Corp (!) and had his instrument with him--"Bugler it is," said Max. He slipped back into old patterns, "X8-621 is ready to commence training, ma'am," but Max informed Bugler that there would not be any more training, and that he no longer had to take orders, especially not from Max. Bugler remembered this little speech later on, after they had left Max behind during the attack, and after relating his conversation with her, the other Bag 'Em kids were convinced of the necessity to go back and save Max from White. The Bag 'Em kids were the first to suffer from the second season's "kill 'em or ship 'em off to Canada" syndrome (I imagine that there is a nice little community in British Columbia by now: "Welcome to Transgen, B.C.!"). Logan provided the papers, and Max provided the final bit of advice: "stay together. You're family." The Bag 'Em kids sole episode was Bag 'Em. They haven't been seen or mentioned since. |
