Arctic

Arctic*

Arctic gave Max, Alec and Biggs an opportunity to show off their motorcycle skills. He was surrounded by police and White, until Our Heroes zoomed on in and Max swept Arctic off his feet. Off they went to Terminal City, where Arctic enjoyed some competitive bantering with Mole.

Arctic compares missions with Mole, revealing that he did "sixty clicks through the snow in one night" during the Siberian campaign, with a "wind chill thirty below."

Finally, proving that no one knows how to throw a party like a transgen, Arctic and Mole ended the episode betting over who could last longest while dealing with the other's element (that is, Arctic with a space heater and Mole in front of an air conditioner): "All right, let's do this. Huh? Huh? Let's see what you've got, igloo." "Yo, salamander boy, time to get schooled. Come on."

All this exciting characterization came to naught, for Arctic appeared only in Love Among the Runes.

Brain

Brain

Brain was an I.T. concentrate, a battle processor: "I'm basically a general, his staff, two database groups, and five logistical support teams." He had what appeared to be psychic abilities, although in actuality, he combined "near-absolute data knowledge with fast Fourier neural nets for heuristics." Heuristics are predictions using probability algorithms. Although Brain was overweight, he was designed for stealth as people looked away and did not remember him. There was a possibility that his fat was what enabled Brain to make his predictions. He began to inform Alec and Max where his probability algorithms were stored, but broke off before he finished--"look, are you sure you want to hear this?"

We were also granted some personal details about Brain. He liked chocolate bars and was eating them throughout the episode. Brain's abilities came in handy while playing video games--his first time, and he received a score of 452,000. Brain lived at One-thirteen 125th Place, apartment 4. He was also (and why am I not surprised?) in love with Max: "I remember you, with your short hair, and your camies, and--and you could blur and everything. I used to watch you and your friends running around, just having a blast." He missed her terribly after the escape in '09. Brain and the others were fed data about the X6s to predict battle behaviour, and Brain felt that "I know you better than anyone, Max. And I would do anything for you" (hellooo, foreshadowing!)

Brain spent the episode saving everyone else's butts. And because he loved Max and because she's the main character, Brain knocked Max out of the way and got shot by the S1W traitor instead of her. "Max, I don't mind if no one else ever saw me. I just wanted to be seen by you," Brain said as he lay dying on the floor. He hid Max's face against him, and his stealth ability extended to cover her even as the cops swept in looking for the escaped S1W.

The others did not simply forget about Brain the moment he was gone. Alec sold off five of Brain's six television sets and moved into his apartment. Opportunistic, but hey, at least Alec and Max admitted that Brain had been "kind of magnificent."

Eyes Only did a hack in Brain's memory: "The courageous among us do not give up. The courageous among us are called more often than others to sacrifice. A great and fearless warrior in this battle died today, a citizen called by his conscience and his heart to do what is difficult. Overlooked in his lifetime by all of us, I ask that you look at him now. See him as he should be seen: in death a hero, as in life a friend."

Brain appeared in Brainiac.

Joshua

Joshua was the first transgenic "Father" Sandeman made: "he made us all. I was first--special. Then more like me. . . more like you. . . more people--up there people. Father lost in all the people. I'm here, waiting" (Designate This). Good to see that Joshua fulfilled the faithful dog idea: he was looking for "Father" during most of the season.

Joshua lived in the basement at Manticore. "So they don't know you're down here?" Max asked, to which Joshua replied "no" (Designate This). Joshua took care of the other X-Freaks: "I can look after myself. At Manticore, I took care of myself. I took care of everybody else" (She Ain't Heavy).

Max continuously warned Joshua that he had to stay hidden: "the thing is--there's nobody like you in the world. You know, people, they get scared real easy about things that are different" (Designate This). Joshua reluctantly came to agree with her assessment: "Joshua sees life go by through window. Life looks back and screams at Joshua" (Love in Vein).

Joshua's life starting looking up in Medium is the Message when he discovered that he had a talent for painting. "My work is my face, Alec!" Alec served as Joshua's agent, selling his paintings to gallery-owner Rita. Unfortunately, Rita wanted to meet the man behind the paintings: not a good idea, Alec insisted. But, Joshua had painted over some papers Max needed and Alec had already sold that painting to Rita. While trying to steal back the painting, Rita caught Joshua. She saw his face and understood what drove Joshua and why he felt it necessary to hide.

For much of the season, Joshua was treated as comic relief. That changed when Joshua meet Annie Fisher, a blind 23 year-old neighbour, and her guide-dog Billie (Hello, Goodbye). Anti-transgenic hysteria was mounting, however, and Alec told Joshua that it wasn't a good idea to keep on seeing Annie.

Joshua told Annie that he was leaving, but they meet up again during Dawg Day Afternoon. Joshua was being chased and took Annie into the sewers with him. She was understandably upset: "what are you saying? You're one of those things they're talking about on TV?" and "you took advantage of me because I can't see?" Annie eventually understood why Joshua had to lie to her, although she had not completely overcome her anger. The cops were beginning to close in on them, and Annie insisted that Joshua leave her behind while he escape. Joshua reluctantly did so. She promised to see Joshua the next day, but White found her before the cops did. He snapped her neck. The media, which had been following the story of Annie's 'abduction' reported a "shocking development. Police have now confirmed that the cause of death was a snapped neck. Witnesses say it would have taken someone with superhuman strength to account for the state in which the body was found."

These events led Joshua to join his fellow transhumans at Terminal City, despite Max's objections: "I can't be with upstairs people. I don't want to be alone anymore" (She Ain't Heavy). Though Joshua did have any weapons training, he did his part for the Transgenic Underground. He picked up transgens such as Gem and Dalton who were making their way to Terminal City. He nearly killed White during the siege of Jam Pony. Joshua also painted the transgenic flag which went up at the end of Freak Nation.
