When did I know? Ah - July – The 3rd of July. Yeah, we were in drill.
That’s when we heard a scream from the street. What we saw turned me cold man. [chuckles]
There was – well a body draggin’ itself around the wall of the yard, people in the
street ran while panic swept through quickly. We had all seen the films as kids,
“Zombies”, “The Dead Walking”, “Dawn of the Dead”, that kinda thing. And we’d all seen
dead people man, [openly laughs – and a few assembled fireman also laugh] but not walking t’wards ya.
A few guys walked over to – what I now know was a zombie, [shakes head]
I still can’t believe I am saying all this!
Yeah they walked to it, believing it to be a prank of one of the lads, but this thing was real,
& moved fast man! Faster than they did in the films.
It got JC to the ground & was droolin’ a blooded mess onto his chest by the time me & a few guys
got there. This thing was dead – very dead – even it’s joints cracked as it moved!
I jammed it's neck in the jaws of life and thumbed the trigger, [ha-ha] those babies
closed sweet and pinched it head clean away [cheer from the boys].
I looked up the street & the struggling masses were being almost corralled by more,
what we now call, “Zeds”, some were fallin’, and some were fightin’, & those that got
felled, man, they got back up.
“Zed’s Dead baby – Zed’s dead.” [chuckles]
“When Hell is full – the dead will walk the earth”, I never thought it could come true!
But here we are – in our station – chattin’ about the real thing. [grabs another beer]
We’re all watching, “The Firehouse Feck Fest” now – hopin’ that’ll come true. [assembled laughter of the fire crew]
[Screams from the street cut short the interview and Raven runs from the building with the Firefighters] |
