Chapter 1B: Defiance
With Sai spending more time with Ryuuen, he felt as if he just found a missing part of himself. Unfortunately, his parents didn't seem to see it the same way…
"I forbid you to associate with that… that… rebel!", his father spat.
Sai felt the anger welling up, "Father, he's a friend. He saved me from the others, how can he be bad?"
He felt his mothers arm on his, "Please Sai, try to understand. Your father's just trying to look out for you. Who knows what that boy is like? How well do you really know him?"
"He's a Red Sort! What else does he need to know about him? They're all just peasants trying to take over! The boy's probably a spy for those idiots that call themselves officials. I bet he's telling them right now how us capitalist sorts are so pitiful. Just stay away from him. When we get through this, I won't have it out that my son needed help from some peasant." Sai listened to his father, feeling his heart turn colder with each word. How could he have such fools for parents? Have they been so spoiled by their wealth and status that they would judge someone so blindly?
Sai tried to suppress his rage, "He's not a spy. Ryuuen is my friend and I'll associate with whomever I choose." It was his first defiant step ever towards his father. He had always been obedient. He was always striving to do better, just for a pat on the back, a kind word, anything. Now he couldn't understand why he ever held his father's opinion in such high regard. His father looked him in the eye, but he stared back steadily. His father suddenly seemed old, tired, "I can't stop you from associating with the boy, but please son, for your family, stay away from him. He'll only bring trouble to us." His parents left their son to sort out his thoughts.
Sai sat in the worn chair, the only one left of their once grand collection. The faded red of the cushion looked more orange, and the once beautiful gold embroidery of the legendary phoenix, Suzaku, was now no more than a faint outline of yellow. He was angry with his father, more than he ever had been before. How could he call Ryuuen a spy? ~ Ryuuen can't be a spy. He said he was my friend, he wouldn't betray me.~ His father's words pounded in his mind. ~ "Stay away from him. He'll only bring trouble to us…for your family…for your family…" Always for my family. My whole life it's always been about upholding the family honor. "We're descended from royalty!" We mustn't be seen with lowly peasants. ~ his thoughts were bitter. An image of Ryuuen flashed in his mind. His smiling face was so trusting, he saw it in his friend's eyes every time they were together. Complete trust. "No, father's wrong. Ryuuen's a friend, he wouldn't betray me!" He had to be wrong, his father was just taking his anger out on his friend because he was a Red Sort. "Right?", he whispered. His eyes were that of a young boy's, desperate for the words to be true. He desperately needed for them to be the truth.
