Rubin out, Sanchez advances


OPORTO, Portugal (AP) -- Second-seeded Chanda Rubin was upset in the second round of the Porto Ladies Open, losing to Bulgaria's Ludomira Bacheva 7-6 (3), 6-1 Thursday.

Top-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario secured a berth in the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over fellow Spaniard Maria Antonia Sanchez Lorenzo.

The quarterfinals will include another Spaniard, Magui Serna, who beat Uzbekistan's Iroda Tulyaganova 6-4, 6-4, and Silvia Farina Elia of Italy, who defeated Cristina Torrens Valero of Spain 6-1, 7-5.

Rubin, ranked 18th in the world, had beaten Nuria Llagostera of Spain 4-6, 7-6 (8), 6-4 in her first-round match earlier Thursday.

Other surprise winners were Petra Mandula, who beat eighth-seeded Marta Marrero 6-1, 6-4, and Ludmila Cervanova, who eliminated sixth-seeded Angeles Montolio 7-5, 6-3.

In other second-round action, fifth-seeded Silvija Talaja topped Miroslava Vavrinec 6-1, 6-4, and Rita Kuti Kis beat Karina Habsudova 7-5, 6-3.
