MUNICH - American second seed Lindsay Davenport retained a slim chance of ending the year as No. 1 after reaching the semi-finals of the WTA Tour Championships with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jelena Dokic.
But Belgian teenager Kim Clijsters could spoil her dream.
The third seed overcame stiff early resistance from Spain's Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario to advance 7-5, 6-1 and set up a semi-final meeting today.
Triple French Open champion Sanchez-Vicario, who turns 30 next month and was a 1993 finalist in this event, gave 18-year-old French Open finalist Clijsters as good as she got in a 52-minute opening set.
But she squandered a triple break point in the ninth game and her forehand which landed long saw the Belgian break to take the set.
Clijsters turned the second into a rout as she raced to victory in just 25 minutes.
Davenport has beaten her at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon with something to spare. But Clijsters has won a meeting at Stanford and said that gave her hope.
'I'm feeling good. I don't have any injuries. I'm capable of doing it I think.' --AFP
