May 25, 2001

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario routed fellow Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez 6-3, 6-1 Friday to advance to the final of the $170,000 Spanish Open.

She will play Angeles Montolio in Saturday's title match of this French Open tuneup. Montolio defeated Ana Isabel Medina 6-4, 6-2 in another all-Spanish match in the other semifinal.

Sanchez-Vicario, who has won the French Open three times and the U.S. Open once, was facing an opponent playing in her first semifinal of a WTA tournament. Sanchez-Vicario broke Martinez twice in the first set. In the second set, Sanchez Vicario surged to a 5-0 lead.

Montolio struggled in the first set but had no trouble in the second. Medina is a doubles specialist who usually teams with Martinez. They won the French Open doubles title last year.
