DOHA, Qatar (Reuters) -- Three-time French Open champion Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario has crashed out of the first round of the Qatar Open with a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Australia's Alicia Molik on Tuesday.
Spain's Sanchez-Vicario, the third seed for the tournament, was totally outplayed by the 21-year-old Australian who was aggressive from the first game.
"I had a gameplan to counter Arantxa," Molik said. "I just tried to be aggressive and put her off her game. She is a very good player and I guess my gameplan forced her to make errors."
Sixth-seed Rita Grande of Italy, was also knocked out on Tuesday, 6-2, 6-4 by Greece's Eleni Daniilidou.
However fourth seed Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand beat Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) while eighth-seeded Australian Nicole Pratt defeated Asa Svensson of Sweden 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
Number five seed Angeles Montolio of Spain and seventh seed Tatiana Panova of Russia were also knocked out in their first round matches on Monday.
