MUGEN

Mugen.  The wonderful program where you can put fighters from different worlds against each other.  Characters from Capcom, SNK, Guilty Gear, Marvel, Variable Geo, Mortal Combat, some random anime that just happens to be out there, somebody's creation or self-insert, et cetera gather together for some major but to kick.

But I have to agree with the tadpole that said; "The Golden Age is gone!".  The creators of Mugen have took the money and ran..  Their work unfinished..  Why?.  Because of WinMugen..  Last I heard, the beta of WinMugen had been passed out to those who donated money to the so-called cause of Mugen..  Someone had hacked into it in order to "upgrade" it....  Next thing I know, the creators of this engine have left in an angry huff, the character "creators" (some of them, not all of them) have turned into elitist scum, and by that time the original game companies have moved on to better, harder-to-crack hardware and software.

And to think:.  The original purpose of Mugen was to make a flight simulator or an engine where old shooters and Pac-Man games can be played...  :(  (The WinMugen engine is still floating around in the web somewhere..  Crank it in your search engine, okay?)
