Japan is a name given by Italian explorers to the islands east of the Asian continent. The land of "the rising sun" actually refers to itself as "Nippon."
     These islands are populated by a people whose culture is a distinct mixture of old tradition & new technology.

     I was born in Okinawa, Japan which is the main island in the Ryukyu chain south of the main islands. My father is Japanese "nisei" born on Oahu, Hawaii. I spent the first five years of my life on Okinawa before immigrating to Hawaii. I have a special love for my Japanese heritage & make efforts to improve my understanding of their culture & language.
     Recently I revisited Japan for several months in the Tokyo-Chiba area. There I spent time watching the grand sumo tournament and attending the festivals. Fortunately my friend, Dave, was able to visit me & we spent time trying out all the fantastic Japanese restaurants.
