Get this album? Yes indeed!!
When I hit play on a Johnny Goudie CD,
I expect the unexpected. In the case of 18 Unreleased Demos, I was not
disappointed. As a listener, I saw only a "Hint of the Truth",
of the roller coaster ride that the last 5 years has been for Mr. Goudie.
The album begins on a sustained synth note, before a very cool guitar
riff kicks into Keep it in Bottles. Slow airy high vocals,
thickened by deep backups. The constant tick of the cymbal, is like a
clock keeping time. The bridge ends on a musical pause, while Johnny's
Eastern inspired vocals trail, before falling into a static charged
guitar solo, one more chorus, and a very cool choppy guitar only out.
Star Ball Contribution is one of the best songs on here.
Penned by Jon Sanchez. Instantly likable tune. Excellent vocals which
suit Johnny down to a T. Great solid mix & an outstanding
arrangement, all edged by a NASA feel. They should broadcast this song
on THE next Mars mission. (ps: amazing drums).
The tongue-in-cheek All of the Time, made me smile from the first
line. The bridge in particular is Johnny's slick vocals, pondering over
the line "All of this time I only wanted to be, one of you, but
there's 2 of me". Squealing effects emphasizing the line "All
of the time" in the chorus, and that wicked vocal scream.
Did I Hurt You?, starts with pin-ball parlour type effects. If
Johnny Goudie mic'd up his conscience, this is what we might hear [kind of fitting that it follows the song, All of the time (I'm
high) ]. The keyboard jangles an almost childish feel, mixed with a
whining lead vocal, and backed by smooth sophisticated airy vocals. An
odd touch to say the least. The song finishes on a sustained bell &
chord, and backups. Definitely the weirdest song on the album.
Turning Me On has a distinct soft "Goudie" sound, with
a whispering eeriness. Very nice indeed.
Dreamy Marie is a great song to chill out to. Great mix, and beautiful bass line.
It's a real shame the vocals are drowned out in Hint of the Truth. It sounds pretty cool, and has an unreal Theremin solo out.
How? has Johnny focusing on vocals, with Josh Gravlin backing him on all instruments. After the second chorus, there is a cool bit with bar-room noise.
I Am Falling, is the other amazing song on the album. I think it is my favourite. It has gorgeous slide guitar, outstanding vocals and lyrics, all backed by a beautiful arrangement. Silky backups!! I loved it instantly. "Catch me, I'm falling!"
Monkey is another very cool song. It's like a tour van song - the song you sing in the car, on the way to work each morning. "Kill me slowly baby, kill me like you really mean it".
Notes from the Edge has Jacob Shulze's infectious drunk "Green Day" style vocals on the verses. Johnny takes the chorus in stark contrast, and it works surprisingly well. I actually go away singing this song, each time I play it.
The keyboards are really beautiful through the chorus of This. Einar is on bass, with beautiful backup vocals. Kyle Schneider has a great drumline happening.
Why can't You Just Fake It? (yeah) The basis of the song is the European fun-fare inspired arrangement. The key to it is the sinisterly sweet, whispered vocals all fading in a mere 2.5 minutes.
Smooth falsetto over the vocal line throughout the entire song, cements the stalking scene early on in Where Do You Get Your Shirts Cleaned?. Outstanding guitars throughout, with classic piano chords strutting underneath it all. Definitely one of my favourites. You are going to want to hit repeat on this one!
If you got the "Effects of Madness", Goudie album (of course you did), then you would already be familiar with the masterpiece that is Already Here. Well this is the demo version, and it is only ever-so-slightly different. It still portrays all the qualities of the album version. Co-written with one of my other favourite songwriters Jeff Klein, who also guests on guitar. The last couple of vocal lines are mixed noticeably differently, however, don't expect any let down here!
The second-last tune Down, is another demo cut from the "Effects of Madness" album. Johnny's voice really suits this song. There are two spots on this demo which vary from that of the album; (1) In the middle, the arrangement pulls back for a moment, leaving the lead vocals & backups, plus a faint ticking, on the "ay yi yi". (2) The ending is completely different, and finishes with keys only!! Very cool bits. I think I like this demo better than the album release.
A very nice job on the INXS hit song, Don't Change. Johnny's voice is lighter than Michael Hutchence's, & he has run it through an effect, adding to a slightly spacier sound.
All in all, this is an outstanding collection & worth every cent of the pathetic price paid!! :)
