Records:
This list does not include very common, resident species (e.g. blackbird, robin, blue tit, woodpigeon, etc.) More than 50 species are resident.
It is in taxonomic (species) order - you can use it to help identify any birds you see.
Where given, date indicates most recent sighting.

Key:
R = Resident.
W = Overwinters.
F = Frequent visitor; several sightings annually.
O = Occasional visitor; one or two sightings annually.
P = Seen on passage. Seasonal / migratory.
Rare = 1 or 2 sightings in recent years.

Breeding Birds:

The following species are known to have bred in Stoke Newington:

Mute Swan, Canada Goose, Gadwall, Mallard, Pochard, Tufted Duck, Ruddy Duck, Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Moorhen, Coot, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Feral Pigeon, Stock Dove, Woodpigeon, Collared Dove, Tawny Owl, Swift, Green Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, House Martin, Grey Wagtail, Pied Wagtail, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Mistle Thrush, Sedge Warbler, Reed Warbler, Common Whitethroat, Blackcap, Willow Warbler, Chiffchaff, Goldcrest, Long-tailed tit, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Coal Tit (rarely), Jay, Magpie, Carrion Crow, Starling, House Sparrow, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Bullfinch (not in recent years), Reed Bunting.


Calendar:

All year:
Great Crested Grebe, Cormorant, Grey Heron, Mute Swan, Canada Goose, Tufted Duck, Pochard, Ruddy Duck, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Coot, Moorhen, Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail.  

Winter (December-February):
Little Grebe, Shoveler, Gadwall, Wigeon and Teal (both frequent), Water Rail, Snipe, Green Sandpiper, occasional uncommon Gulls, Redwing, occasional Lesser Redpoll.  

Spring (March-May):
Departing winter wildfowl, Shelduck (rare), Common Sandpiper and (rarely) other waders, Common Tern, passage hirundines, Meadow Pipit, commoner migrant warblers and other passerines.  

Summer (June-August):
Red-crested Pochard (from July), Common Tern, Swift, House Martin, Sand Martin and occasional Swallow; breeding warblers and songbirds.  

Autumn (September-November):
Gadwall, Shoveler, Red-crested Pochard, Wigeon and Teal (both frequent), occasional waders including Common Sandpiper, migrants including Skylark, Meadow Pipit, wagtails and warblers.
