Director and Concept
Tsurumaki Kazuya
Assistant Director on the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV Series, Director on the Evangelion Movies, Storyboards and Technical Direction on Kareshi Kanojo no Jijoo
How does it feel to be directing my own project for the first time, you ask?
Well, I'm only doing because I was told to, which sums up how I feel, I guess (laughs).
It's kind of the feeling that a director at a TV network has, in that, since I work here, I have to make a go of whatever work comes my way.
Having said that, however, I want to present my own images within this predefined dramatic setting.
In addition, I need to capture audience ratings.
That's the spot I'm in.
I want to create nice imagery, and get lots of people to see it. (Quoted from 2000.01 Newtype)
Visual Concepts and Character Designs
Sadamoto Yoshiyuki
Character Designer and Manga Illustrator on Neon Genesis Evangelion, Character Designer and Animation Director on Nadia of the Seas of Wonder/The Secret of Blue Water, Character Designer and Animation Director on The Royal Space Force--Wings of Honneamise
Interviewer: What degree of involvement do you plan to have with this project?
Sadamoto: My involvement is finished, as of now!
(laughs) Originally, I was told that I only needed to do the characters' faces, and even before that, they said, just give us the character concepts.
So I did, and when they saw them, the response was, there's no rear designs!
So I said, were you kidding when you said that I only had to do the basic concepts?!
Tsurumaki: Well, you said you wanted to do the whole thing, didn't you?
Sadamoto: I said I wanted to do the whole character design work!
Tsurumaki: Tsk! That's what I get for being considerate. (2000.01 Animage)
Animation Director
Hiramatsu Tadashi
Animation Director on Neon Genesis Evangelion, Character Designer, Animation Director, and Storyboards on Kareshi Kanojo no Jijoo
In the first half of the 20th Century, a movement arose to overthrow what had up to that time been standard techniques of classical music, to wit, melody, rhythm, and tune, because they were in the way of creating anything new. So what about the field of graphics?
What about Japanese animation?
Will FLCL become an anime for the 21st Century, one freed from the various conventions of anime? (2000.01 Magazine Z)
Animation Director
Imaishi Hiroyuki
Animation Director and Storyboards on Kareshi Kanojo no Jijoo
Hello. My name is Imaishi Hiroyuki, and how do you do.
I'm serving as animation director on episode 2.
We're already slipping steadily behind schedule. Things feel very good indeed.
I'm really excited about this. We have a lot of good (really good) key animators, which is to say, I'm not fit to lick their boots.
They're working up a storm, and we have big hopes. I, the animation director, may be the worst artist here. Oh no! But I'm doing all I can.
As for the story, the drift from Eva to KareKano, and from there to FLCL, is there, while at the same time, this one has Tsurumaki's now tastes, which make it a little bit different from its predecessors.
And I think that's a good thing.
The next part I'll be working on will be episode 5, but screenplay for that one isn't anywhere near being done yet, which means I have no idea at all what's going to happen, though I'm really pumped for it. Well, anyway, I hope you like it.
Screenplay
Enomoto Yooji
Screenwriter on Utena The Revolutionary Girl and Neon Genesis Evangelion
Should we be telling kids that, because they're kids, they shouldn't try to exceed their grasp?
Or should we be telling them instead that they need to reach high if they're to grow?
Whatever the case, this young people's anime will blaze a trail through this, the last year of the 20th Century.
The power of Tsurumaki Kazuya's imagination is not to be underestimated. This one's coming at you with AT Fields at full strength. (2000.01 Magazine Z)
Gainax Producer
Sato Hiroki
Producer on Kareshi Kanojo no Jijoo
I used to dream about the future.
A future called the 21st Century.
But the 21st Century will be here next year.
I had thought that I would be an adult by the time that happened.
But I am still terribly childish.
Today, I have my hands full just with my own personal affairs. But what of tomorrow, or next year, in fact?
It is my hope that, even though this is anime,,
it will communicate our feelings
about the things from this century
which need to be dealt with in this, its final year.
Therefore, it will only be available in the year 2000. So don't miss it.
Get yourself a PlayStation 2 or some other DVD player to watch it.
Production I. G. Producer
Nishizawa Masatomo
Executive Producer on the Movie Versions of Both Slayers and Neon Genesis Evangelion
My stance is that the content will make or break this series, and thus I have no comment, except to say, stay tuned! (2000.01 Magazine Z)
Executive Producer
Ootsuki Toshimichi
Executive Producer on Revolutionary Girl Utena The Movie, Martian Successor Nadesico The Movie; Producer on Kareshi Kanojo No Jijoo
Gainax's eagerly awaited new production, FLCL, is even more unusual than its odd title already suggests, with characters the like you've never seen before, a story the likes of which you've never before experienced, directing that trashes the norms for the field, music that...
Well, you get the idea. Readers (of this magazine) can count on Gainax to deliver the kind of fresh imagery that they've come to expect. Everyone is giving their all, from director Tsurumaki Kazuya and character designer Sadamoto Yoshiyuki on down.
I too am working away on this as if it were my first production. I hope you like it. (2000.01 Magazine Z)
