Router for sharing cable/dsl - Asante 5 Port Router, model FR3004LC - $30This router has four 10/100 Mbps ports, one WAN port, an RS-232C serial port, and a parallel printer port. It has worked great with SBC DSL in St. Louis (it should work fine with any high speed internet connection). With the router comes a power adapter, Ethernet cable, and CD.
(From http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,5465,00.asp):AsantÈ Technologies isn't a household name with PC users, but the company is well known in the Macintosh networking universe, where it has built a reputation for simple, easy-to-use products. Both the AsantÈ FriendlyNET FR3004C and the FR3004LC continue that tradition. Nearly identical in appearance, each router has a cool, stackable, translucent plastic case; an array of LEDs (including power, status, and link on the front panel); four 10/100 Ethernet ports; a WAN port; and an RS-232C serial port on the rear panel. The sole difference is that the FR3004LC also has a parallel printer port on the back for its print server. Documentation is easy to follow. Most people will have no trouble using AsantÈ's browser-based configuration and management software, which includes a useful activity log. An Advanced Settings screen lets you set up special ports for games and other interactive applications, and it provides access to the router's virtual-server feature, which can route specific types of incoming traffic to designated PCs on your LAN. We liked that we could configure both routers to block specific types of Internet traffic, such as Usenet news feeds and AOL Instant Messenger, for designated PCs on the LAN. But we could not control Net access based on the time of day, which is a useful parental-control feature in some of the other products in our roundup. The FR3004LC's print server lets you share most parallel-port printers across your LAN. The communications links between the networked PCs and the shared printer are one-way, so printers that require bidirectional communications won't work properly. Both routers include serial ports, so you can connect an external modem as a backup to your broadband connection. |
