Paws For Thought- Did you know 15% of all orange cats are female?
- Did you know only 1 in 270 male cats have three colours present in their fur?
- Did you know cats can start mating as early as 6 months of age? And that they can often be fixed at about 8 weeks of age? (This procedure on kittens that young is selective: check with your vet!)
- A pair of cats can produce an average of two litters per year; that means in seven years they could produce an average of about 420,000 kittens! Why you should spay or neuter your cat.
- Female cats can produce one litter of kittens that have more than one father.
- The ASPCA estimates that about 15 million cats and dogs are euthanised each year in America because of the amount of unwanted animals.
- The younger they are, the easier it is to tame a feral cat.
- The gestation period for Siamese cats is longer (about 71 days) than other breeds of cats (about 65 days).
- For every 415 children born every hour in the U.S., there are 3,500 kittens born.
- Did you know tortoiseshell (mostly black with orange and white patches) cats are well-known for their spontaneous, unpredictable behaviour while orange tabby cats are famous for their laid-back, mellow manner? Of course, these are stereotypes!
- Sterility in tortoiseshells is genetic, as is deafness in white cats with blue eyes and polydactyly cats (cats with extra toes).
- Cats that are white with colour (like orange, grey, or black) on their ears, tail, and a few big patches on their back are sometimes known as "Turkish Vans".
