Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy

"Stay fuzzy, save the world.. choices."

Well well well. I'm pretty impressed. Despite the game's cutesy appeal, most younger gamers will have a major challenge getting the full 100%.

Pros

  • Challenging, but never impossible There are only a few times when I beat up a few boxes with my lemon branch staff in frustration, but nothing that actually made me want to throw the game out the window. Precursor Basin may have been one of the toughest levels, but it's also the most fun.
  • Good graphics The animation and backgrounds are all beautifully rendered. Jak and Daxter was one of the earlier PS2 games to come out, and Sony used it to showcase the system's powerful graphics and rendering capabilities. The animation is so smooth, especially the ambient effects like Daxter climbing on Jak's shoulder, clinging on for dear life.
  • Fun What can I say? This game is fun as hell. The Speeder and Flut Flut areas are a welcome change with good secondary control schemes.

    Cons

  • Poor camera at times The camera sometimes follows Jak too closely or smashes against him when he backs too close against a wall. Have you ever tried landing on a floating platform below you while looking up? It's not fun. Other times you may be trying to avoid a flying lurker while simultaneously maneuvering moving platforms above pools of lethal dark eco. One move in the wrong direction when the camera changes angles and you'll be hearing Jak scream.
  • Annoying ottsels Daxter is an obnoxious prick. It may be one of the comedic points of the game, but he hogs all the credit for everything. Not to mention that he's in your face everytime you die complaining about How am I going to get changed back how?
  • Too short The game does seem a bit short. It may be because i'm an RPG convert, but I like games to be nice and long, with lots of side quests to keep you busy even after the final boss has falen. And I don't mean things like trying to find and hunt down every single item in every level. Real stuff like hidden areas and cheats.

This game served me well as a challenge. I would say the hardest areas are Precursor Basin and Gol and Maia's Citadel.
