The Whale Shark

Appearance:

An unmistakable, huge shark with a broad, flat head. Truncated snout and very big terminal mouth. Origin of first dorsal fin over the pelvic fins. Second dorsal fin relatively small. Prominent ridges along the sides with the lowermost expanding into the prominent keels on each side of the lunate caudal fin. Prominent subterminal notch.

Coloration:

Greyish to dark color with a unique checkerboard pattern of light spots, horizontal and vertical stripes.

Size:

The whale shark can be up to 46 feet (14 m), weighing up to 15 tons. Average size about 1000cm to 1200cm, maximum total length still unsure but approximately 1400cm. It is the largest fish in the world. Females are larger than males (like most sharks).

Teeth

Whale sharks have about 3,000 very tiny teeth but they are of little use. Whale sharks are filter feeders who sieve their tiny food through their large gills.
