The name MATHER is pronounced with a soft A in Leeds, and does not rhyme with bathe of lathe, but with gather. There is a firm in Wortley, originally a village just west of Leeds city center, called Mather's Black Beer. The next village west is Bramley and north of that is Rodley. The firm is still going strong but we think it is now called J.E.Mather and Sons. Originally the firm made this black beer which was very sweet like an Irish stout, like Guinness.
