Poems by Terri Lyn Stansfield
Baby Blues
The baby's cried all night
And I have paced the floor
I have reached my wit's end
I can't take anymore
You, on the other hand
Have slept the whole night through
You're rested and awake
What's the first thing you do?
Offer to lend a hand?
Dole out some sympathy?
Oh no, you don't do that
You've the audacity
To ask what's for breakfast
Expecting me to cook
You must not have noticed
So take another look
My hair in unruly
My eyes are tired and dull
I'm walking in my sleep
But at last, there's a lull
The baby is sleeping
For the first time all night
And I couldn't care less
If I do look a fright
And as for your breakfast
You don't want to go there
You can starve right to death
That's how much that I care
So just go on to work
Maybe when you get home
I'll be human again
And dear, while you are gone
Enjoy all your freedom
And just have a great time
Tonight you baby sit
That big bed is all mine

Battered Love
For years we have been neighbors
Separated only by a thin wall
I don't think I've ever met a more special woman
Caring, giving, compassionate
But every night I hear the fights
And every day I see the evidence
Painted with viciousness upon your beautiful face
How someone so cruel could ever earn your love is beyond
me
And why you stay with him, I'll never understand
You never ask for my help, though I would gladly give it
I yearn for the day when you run to my open arms
I would cherish you, and protect you
I would lay the world at your feet
I would treat you as the precious gift that you are
You owe him nothing; come to me, and be my world
And no one will ever hurt you again

Changed
I was stumbling through life
On a steadily downward spiral
Alienated from humanity
Caring for no one
And having no one who cared
No direction to my life
No reason to live
At the edge of disaster
And not caring if I fell
Then you came into my life
So full of love
Giving it, unconditionally, to me
Changing me forever
And claiming me as your own

Feral Attraction
I know that you're trouble
Every move that you make
Is blatant and sexy
There can be no mistake
You are out on the prowl
You're looking for action
And you draw attention
With feral attraction
And that look in your eyes
Is magnetic and hot
And you leave not a doubt
As to what you have got
You're way beyond tempting
Every movement screams lust
You're not out for romance
You're not looking for trust
You just want a partner
For one sensual night
You have no interest
In what's wrong, or what's right
And it just so happens
That I am in accord
With your heated desires
Just what you're looking for
Let's get out of this place
And set the night on fire
I will be your lover
And fulfil your desires
We'll part in the morning
Go our separate ways
Until night falls again
Then we'll come out to play

Helpless
I look into your eyes, and I am lost
Though I know this is wrong
I am powerless to leave
As you draw me deeper into your web
I know I will regret my actions
But I cannot help myself
I am spellbound by all that you do
Helpless to refuse you anything
In the heat of the moment
Wanting it as much as you do
But with the aftermath comes the guilt
Powerful and distressing, weighing me down
Yet I know that I will come to you again
You have but to beckon
And I have no choice but to obey

Her Hero
I mind my own business
I don't rock the boat
I follow directions
I function by rote
I always endeavor
To stay out of sight
But I have to speak up
For this is not right
You're taking advantage
Of your position
And trying to force her
Into submission
I won't stand by and watch
And do not a thing
While you force her into
A wild office fling
Sure, you can fire me
Just go right ahead
But I'll go down swinging
So maybe, instead
You should reconsider
What you have to lose
And what will your boss think
When he gets the news
I will go straight to him
I promise you that
Why don't you back off now
That we've had this chat
You glare daggers at me
As you leave the room
But you take out with you
The feeling of gloom
Now everyone's looking
At me in surprise
They never expected
To see me defy
The boss so fearlessly
And the truth be told
I didn't know I could
Really be that bold
But I look down at you
And I have no doubt
That I'd do it again
If that filthy lout
Doesn't leave it at this
And leave you alone
Yes, I will protect you
You're not on your own
You smile at me sweetly
And my heart just melts
Then you give me your thanks
Your number, as well
And I'm glad that I stood
Up in your defense
This could be the start of
A lasting romance

I Want To Be Like You
You are everything
That I want to be
I know however
It's far beyond me
I'll never attain
Your inner beauty
But I stand in awe
And it speaks to me
You're gentle and kind
And you rise above
All that comes your way
And when you are shoved
You retaliate
In your special way
And feelings are soothed
Yet you always sway
The other party
To give in to you
And things always go
As you want them to
You're caring and sweet
Such a gentle soul
And though I keep it
As my special goal
It's just not in me
To be as you are
But I hold you up
As a shining star
The whole world would be
A much better place
If everyone had
Your outlook and grace
As long as people
Like you still exist
There's hope for mankind
And the peace we've missed

I Watch You
I watch you every day
I know your every move
I know where you work
I know where you live
I know what time you rise
I know what time you go to bed
And whether or not you sleep alone
I know what time you go to lunch
What you eat, and how long you stay
I watch you, and I wait
And someday soon, I'll make my move
And no one will watch you again

Sweet Dream
You came to me in a dream
With a beauty not of this world
Your hair like silken strands of gold
Your eyes bluer than the bluest sky
Your touch as gentle as the lighting of a butterfly
And your spirit sweeter than the sweetest honey
You touched the jagged edges of my soul
And, seamlessly, made it whole again
You touched the hardened rock that was my heart
And made it tender and vibrant once more
Then you stayed with me throughout the night
Holding me in your arms with the purest love
And I fought against waking with the coming of the dawn
Losing the battle, unable to hold on to the dreamscape
Yet as I open my eyes, things are different
I am not the same person I was last night
For in my sleep, I was touched by an angel
And given a whole new chance at life

You Think
You think that I don't know
But I'm fully aware
Of where you go at night
And what you do while there
You think you're being slick
With all your sneaky ways
But I know everything
And you're going to pay
You think that I'm so dense
That I don't have a clue
But you're the one who's thick
Yes, I know where and who
You think you've got it good
But you will be surprised
To find you've been locked out
When you come home tonight
You think I'll be in bed
Already sound asleep
Well, at least you're half right
But I've got company
You think this is a joke
That I will let you in
But you'd better go back
To see your old "sick friend"
You think I'll come around
And take you back some day
But I found someone new
When you went out to play

Wasteland
I walk in the shadows
Craving the darkness
My heart at one with the night
The desolation that is my deepest self
Needing the blackness, melding into it
Disappearing into the nothingness
And taking solace in the anonymity
Cherishing the few hours of escape
But knowing that all too soon
With the coming of the light of day
I will have to face once more
The wasteland that is my soul
