My `86 has well over 100,000 miles on it and I could feel that the clutch cable was starting to really stretch and it wouldn't stay in adjustment. While browsing through the Parts for Sale area of The Corral Web page, I saw that someone had a new Classic Corral kit for the SVO (not the same as 5.0 cars) that was manually adjustable and the price was right. I sent the money and he sent the kit. No problems and it was still in the original packaging. A couple of days after it arrived, my cable broke on the way to work which meant that I had to drive home without a clutch. Really fun at stop lights!
The job itself is sort of a pain in the back job with much of the work under the dash. Plan on taking your driver's seat out and finding something to prevent the mounting studs from leaving permanent impressions. Getting the old one out is simple: just follow the directions which were pretty good. A person to help feed the new one through the engine compartment speeds things up. Again, just follow the directions. Lubricate the pivot shaft and other stuff up there while you are at it. It will save crawling back under the dash to eliminate squeaks.
As for the quality of the kit itself, the new machined aluminum quadrant was well done, but I think they could have done a little better where the cable hooks in. I also think it would help if they included come spacers to positively locate the quadrant on the shaft. I made some up from aluminum. It is easy to adjust and I added a spring under the car to get a more positive return of the peddle and to eliminate rattles. You'd think they would include this as you remove all the old springs from under the dash.
My biggest complaint was how much the supplied cable stretched in the first couple of weeks. I had to make numerous adjustments which meant jacking up the car, etc. Would I do it again? Absolutely! It is much better than the stock plastic mechanism. I just wish they would also include a tube of Sports Cream for my aching back.
