There were only 9844 units sold for the three production years. Putting this into context, Shelby Mustangs production was over 15,000 units! There were 4508 units sold in 1984; 1515 in 1985; 439 in 1985.5 (very rare); and 3382 for 1986 (it's final year). Quite low!
Anyway, the SVO Mustang was engineered by Special Vehicle Operations (Ford's racing group), the underlying purpose for the vehicle was to indicate to automotive enthusiasts the world over that "Ford's Back"--back into racing, back into the production of performance oriented vehicles, and back into production of performance parts for all Ford products.
The SVO Mustang was marketed to appeal to the discriminating buyer who appreciated fine automobiles. It's European bred handling and performance hardware was at the cutting edge of technology for that time frame. Realizing the fact that technology costs money, the SVO Mustang was priced some $6000 above Mustang GT.
