Mega-Octane, in all his G1-repaint glory!

A flatbed armed to the teeth.

A wider view of the Combaticon Commander

Mega-Octane's base mode. S'right, Scourge don't get all the fun.

MEGA-OCTANE

PRICE POINT/SIZE: DELUXE
FUNCTION: DECEPTACON FLATBED TRUCK
MOTTO: "I command you to destroy!"

'Mega-Octane is the cruel, cold-blooded combiner general and command center. He merges with the other combiners to become one Deceptacon - with Mega-Octane in total control of them all. He is the only one with the strength and skill to use the weapons he carries - and he uses them with steely accuracy in battle.'

Ahh! Ladies and gentlemen there is nothing like a repainted Generation 1 toy to warm the heart. Mega-Octane is a repaint of one of my personal all time favourite generation 1 figures, the Combaticon Onslaught. While Mega-Octane may not have Onslaught's dark and gritty colour scheme he is still a force to be reckoned with.

VEHICLE MODE:
Mega-Octane is the centre point of what has come to be known as a Scramble City combiner group, named after the rare Japanese Generation 1 episode that detailed the origin of Metroplex and involved every single combiner team to that date. He is a large - larger than most - flatbed truck with a huge gun mounted on his back. He's a rather large figure in this mode, easily the length of a mega though without the substance. Aside from the large Decepticon logo on the top of his cab, it and his aft are Khaki green with lighter green and dark brown camouflage details painted down his length, except over his rear legs where he is a flat Khaki colour. On his sides and front and on the turret on his roof are some orange details which look remarkably out of place, but since it's a feature of all the commandoes save for Armourhide it can be forgiven. The two barrels on his turret are flat grey and his windows and grill are black, his wheels are plastic as opposed to the rubber used for the car brothers, Prime and Magnus, but nevertheless they roll fairly well - though the middle wheels don't appear to touch the ground.

Mega-Octanes vehicle mode is an intimidating and powerful match for anything the Autobots can throw at it, as one would expect from the general of the team that forms the awesome Ruination.

TRANSFORMATION (VEHICLE MODE TO BASE MODE):
Start by pulling the bottom of the flatbed down ad separating the halves. fold them to the sides and push them up, then split the cab and fold the sides down to meet the halves of the bottom section. Detach the turret from the top of the truck, turn it around and attach it to Mega-Octane's exposed head. Clip the ramp onto the gap between the legs, at the top where the hole is, then place your Combaticon of choice on the top if you feel like accessorising.

BASE MODE:
Each one of the scramble city combiner generals had a base mode, and all of them were fairly useless. Mega-Octane's, though, seems to fit his style as a flatbed, it fits together fairly well and doesn't look too out of place - after all, Armourhide and Rollbar have to get up there somehow.

Mega-Octane's colours in this mode are pretty much the same, Though more orange and grey come through thanks to the inside of the cab and trailer, and the ramp. He can still roll, so this can still be thought of as a mobile defence platform or artillery. And hey, just because I don't know what it is and it didn't appear in the cartoon doesn't mean I can't think it's cool.

TRANSFORMATION (VEHICLE MODE TO ROBOT MODE):
I decided to describe the transformation from vehicle mode since the base mode conversion is basically 'pull everything out'. So here we go: First, separate the bottom of the vehicle and pull each half down, Fold back the ends with the wheels and stand. Separate the cab and fold down to the sides to form the arms, slide down the switch dealies to expose the hands. Attach the green chest panel to the square hole on his torso, put the ramp in one hand as a shield and his rifle in the other.

ROBOT MODE:
There's something to be said for nostalgia, it's a powerful weapon. This is the fourth version of this mould released over the 20 years it has existed and to this day it remains one of my favourites.
Mega-Octane is large in this mode, too, towering over all other deluxe's and even a few mega's. He hasn't got much in the way of articulation - which isn't uncommon for a G1 mould - his shoulders and neck are about it, and his hips which can fold out to the side, though that's a by-product of his combination transformation. He's solid as a brick, however, and you'll have fun trying to get him to fall over without making him hold a basketball or something.

Mega Octane carries over the same colours from his previous modes, though the grey is again more prominent on his chest, and the black of his thighs darkens the mode a bit, making it all the more reminiscent of G1 Onslaught. His head is black, too, and has red/orange eyes. His shield, when held in his hand, makes him look something of a cross with a roman centurion, though it an also be clipped to his back.

OVERALL:
As I've said, one of my all-time favourite moulds; I recommend him to anyone. Even if you have Onslaught, this is a decent repaint. I'm a little sore that the quality of the plastic is such that he's not going to survive long with heavy use, so I'll have to be nice to him. Recommended for nostalgia or for his fun if simplistic transformation if you don't plan on getting the rest of Ruination; if you do, though, he is a must have.
