Ultra Magnus is one of the great characters in Transformers. Since his
introduction in The Transformers: The Movie he has been popular both as a
character and as a toy in the Generation 1 line. He returns to Robots in
Disguise in his familiar red, white and blue, and his alternate mode is still a
car carrier capable of holding 3 deluxe-sized vehicles. But don't be fooled:
This ain't your daddy's Ultra Magnus. In the series he is insubordinate,
arrogant and really doesn't think too highly of Prime. In his toy incarnation he
is a beautiful piece of work; fully posable, detailed and feature packed. VEHICLE
MODE:
Ultra Magnus' vehicle mode is again a car transport capable of holding three
deluxe-sized vehicles. The cab is again white, with translucent blue windows and
a vac metal blue and silver grill complete with vac metal sliver Autobot symbol.
There is an electronic, translucent red light on the roof of the cab that lights
up when you press a small button on his backpack, more on this later. the sides
and top rails of the trailer section are a flat grey with two Autobot symbols on
his sides. the back of the trailer is covered by two dark grey panels detailed
with red, orange, yellow and light grey. the bottom section of the trailer is
done in a royal blue with light blue and dark grey pieces, underneath you
can see two dark grey pieces which are Omega Prime's feet. the section that
holds the middle wheels is white and the wheels themselves are vac metal silver. There
is a tremendous amount of detail on this figure, just below his cab on the front
you can see what look like gatling guns on either side, the tires are made of
rubber with the front two saying "Transformers", the middle two saying
"Cybertron" and the rear saying "God Magnus", which was this
figures name when originally released as part of the Japanese Car Robots line.
the whole figure has a lot of detail such as wiring and piping molded into the
plastic. Blue Bolts - Ultra Magnus' gun - can be housed on either the front or
back of the cab. Blue bolts is royal blue, with a light blue rocket launcher on
top, translucent blue target, red handholds and dark grey guns on the front, the
missile launcher can hold two white missiles which are spring-loaded and fire a
good distance, about a foot and a half. The panels on the back can be opened and
the blue connectors folded to the sides to allow cars to be loaded, swing the
top rail down to roll cars onto the top or leave it up to have one enter the
bottom. TRANSFORMATION (ROBOT MODE): Begin by detaching Blue Bolts
and setting it aside. Pull the front side panels out and separate the cab from
the trailer and set the cab aside. Gently twist the halves of the trailer -
pulling the left side up and pushing the right side down - to separate them.
Fold the rear panel down and swing the blue connecter out so that it rests
against the grey sides, now bend the top 2/3rds of the grey pieces out. On the
outside of the bottom level of the trailer there is a blue section that should
be folded around. swing the grey sections back down but do not attach them, fold
them backwards 180° and attach. Now take the top third and fold out 180° and
connect to the rest of the grey section, turn the piece over. Notice the light
blue segment on the underside, fold it upwards, now stand the segments on the
opposite side from the light blue pieces. Begin transforming the cab by
pulling the sides of the grill out, then rotate the entire grill section up so
that it covers the windows. swing the cab section up from the rest of the
vehicle. Swing the light blue sections out and then swing the cab back down. separate
the white section with the tires and swing them down to the side, the
shoulders fit into a small slot on the sides of the cab, now extend the hands.
Fold the upper grey tracks in half and snap together, swing them outwards so
they form a "V" shape. pull one track upwards and then twist the
tracks so they run horizontally, push the grey piece between the cab and the
blue backpack down and swing the backpack up and around so that the tracks are
between it and the cab, reform the "V" shape with the tracks. Bend the
grey panel down and twist the front around 180° to reveal Magnus' head, swing
the dark grey panel in front of it down and put the head in place, on the back
of the grey panel are two blue and light grey pieces, fold them out gently so as
not to detach them and then swing the grey panel back in place and clip onto the
light grey section that holds Magnus' head. connect the light blue parts of the
legs to the light grey parts of the torso and stand. Magnus is now in robot
mode.
TRANSFORMATION (BLUE BOLTS):
Swing down the two blue buttresses so that they point to the floor, rotate the
red hand grips so that they both face out. From here Blue Bolts has three modes,
depending on how you wish to implement him.
- Chaingun mode - rotate the two gun sections out so that they point away
from each other. fold the first buttress toward the laser cannon and rotate
the shoulder connector (the roughly triangular bit on the end of the
buttress) so that it points up. Swing the other buttress up with the
shoulder connector pointing down so that it becomes the body of the weapon.
turn the missile launcher to the left so that it points the same way as the
chaingun and raise the target. plug the back buttress into the holes on
Ultra Magnus' left shoulder and fit his arm onto it by putting the plug on
Blue Bolts' left side into the hole on Magnus' forearm.
- Laser Cannon mode - rotate the two gun sections out so that they point
away from each other. Fold the buttress on the chaingun side toward the
chaingun with the shoulder connector pointing up. swing the second buttress
up with the connector facing down to form the body of the weapon, rotate the
missile launcher to the right and raise the target. Plug the shoulder
connector into the holes on Magnus' right shoulder and fit his arm onto it
by putting the plug on Blue Bolt's right side into the hole on Magnus'
forearm.
- Maximum Firepower mode - rotate the two guns so that they point forward
and swing both buttresses back with their connectors pointing upwards.
Rotate the missile launcher so that it is pointing forward and raise the
target. Plug the connectors into the slots on Magnus' shoulders and fit both
or either of Magnus' arms onto the weapon by putting the plugs on either
side of the weapon into the holes on Magnus' forearms, rotate the red tabs
down slightly and rest Magnus' hands on top of them.
ROBOT MODE:
One word neatly sums up Ultra Magnus in this mode: huge. At very nearly a
foot in height he is taller than Battle Mode Optimus Prime. His main colors
are blue and white, with red and grey details. His legs, which make up most
of his height, are royal blue with grey, light grey, red, orange and yellow
detailing. The sides of his legs are light grey due to the sides of the
vehicle mode while his upper legs are light blue. his pelvis and sides are
white while his chest is dark grey with light grey and blue details. His
shoulders and upper arms are blue, his forearms are white and his hands are
blue and white. His 'wings' are grey - owing to the tracks of his robot mode
- and his backpack is blue with dark grey Jets on the bottom. His face is
painted in blue and grey with vac metal yellow eyes. if you look closely
there is an Autobot symbol on his forehead - a nice touch. On the bottom of
the Jetpack there's a small button; this is for the electronic lights and
sounds. pressing the button will activate several different recordings
depending on where you have Blue Bolts positioned.
- If Blue Bolts is not connected Magnus
will say "Ultra Magnus, transform."
- If Blue Bolts is in chaingun mode you
will hear Chaingun fire.
- If Blue Bolts is in Laser Cannon mode
you will hear the sound of laser fire.
- If Blue Bolts is in Maximum Firepower
mode you will hear Magnus say "Fire!" followed by gunfire.
There is another voice recording; when
Ultra Magnus and Optimus Prime are combined to form Omega Prime and the
backpack button is pressed the voice recorder says "Optimus Prime,
Ultra Magnus, Combine!"
In this mode Ultra Magnus has 21 points of
articulation, including his neck, shoulders (2 each), elbows, hands (3
each), legs (2 each) and knees(2 each). He is not very well balanced, mostly
due to the fact that most of his weight is in the top half and his legs have
no real substance to them, he has a tendency to fall backward or bend
forward, and he will do the splits if his legs are bent too much on a flat
surface such as a table top. however he is still capable of a wide variety
of poses and he is an extremely detailed and fun figure. I definitely
recommend him, especially if you have all of the car brothers; there's
something about loading Magnus and carrying the car brothers around that's
just a lot of fun; Ultra Magnus plows through the Predacon ranks and then
unleashes the Car Brothers to finish the job!
Ultra Magnus is a must for any fan or
collector; however - like most of the Robots in Disguise line, if you
already have his Car Robots counterpart God Magnus you probably won't
wish to part with the money again unless you happen to be a completist.
