My page of links will be mainly to those sites of a similar nature. However, I have also included links to sites which, for one reason or another, I believe have a valid reason to be included here. These links are arranged in no particular order.



Australia and the American Civil War.
Barry Crompton's site includes pages relating to the visit of the CSS Shenandoah to Melbourne, Australia, in early 1865, as well as details of the American Civil War Round Table of Australia, Inc., a dedicated bunch of folk who re-enact and research just about every aspect of the conflict.
Association to Commemorate the Chinese Serving in the American Civil War.
Gordon Kwok, one of the officials of the Olde Colony Civil War Round Table, in Massachusetts, has compiled an impressive list of names and details of the Chinese who are known to have served in the Armies and Navies of both the Union and Confederate forces. The site includes a number of images of some of these gentleman who risked the discriminatory practises of the period. Gordon also has a number of other sites, including one listing the various Civil War Round Tables in the US, and overseas.
Robert Watson - Civil War Diary.
This page is part of the Florida in the Civil War web site, administered by the Florida Department of State, Bureau of Archives and Records Management. It includes excerpts from the diary of a soldier of the 7th Florida Infantry, who later served in the Confederate States Navy, aboard the CSS Savannah, and includes much interesting data relating to his service. It is believed to be the only diary of an enlisted sailor of the Confederate States Navy, and as such, is quite unique.
Eugenious A. Jack, CSN.
A lengthy biography of an engineer who had served aboard the CSS Virginia, as well as several other Confederate Naval vessels during the war, having travelled just about all around the Confederacy during his service. This account, based on his original memoirs, was presented in a paper, by Allen P. Cutchen, on January 24, 1998, to the Masons - Virginia Research Royal Arch Chapter #1753.
U.S. Navy Veterans Residing in Nebraska in 1891.
This list, transcribed by Alice Miller from the Roster of Soldiers, Sailors and Marines of the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the War of the Rebellion, residing in Nebraska June 1, 1891, includes name, rank and vessel or unit, with some additional data. A similiar list for 1893 can also be accessed.
Database of Illinois Civil War Veterans Serving in the U.S. Navy.
Part of the Illinois State Archives home page, this list of approximately 3000 names of Illinois Civil War naval enlistees includes birthplace and instructions for requesting additional data. Created by Fred Delap of the Edgar County Genealogical Society, Kansas, Illinois.
Birthplace of Union Civil War Sailors of African Descent.
A National Park Service site which contains much information derived from the Muster Rolls at the National Archives relating to the service of Natives of many areas of the world who served in the Union Navy. By clicking on the appropriate site at the map one can access personal data on Union sailors who were born in that particular nation.

Activities of the Union Navy on the Mississippi, and the surrounding area, including the Gulf of Mexico. Gary Matthews' excellent site includes many rosters, some biographies, and numerous other interesting features.
Finnish Sailors and Soldiers in the American Civil War.
Basically a collection of names and branch of service for natives of Finland who served in the Union and Confederate Armies and Navies, compiled by Mika Roinila. Hopefully the information available at this site will be expanded upon in the future.
Confederate States Navy.
John Ellis has uploaded numerous images and details of the burial sites of Confederate States Navy, and Marine Corps personnel at his page. There are also many articles and lists of personnel relating to the Confederate Navy and Marine Corps. The site is constantly updated, and is possibly the ultimate site relating to the Naval forces of the Confederate States.
The Naval Historical Center Home Page.
This site includes links to many of the facilities available at the Naval Historical Center in Washington, D.C. Check out their pages upon pages of images of naval vessels, including many from the Civil War period. These images, being in the public domain, can be downloaded, but it would be appropriate, if using them at a site, to include the proper credit. There are also quite a number of images of Civil War Naval personnel, including those who were awarded the Medal of Honor.
CSS Virginia Home Page.
Mabry Tyson's site is a plethora of information relating to the activities that occurred at Hampton Roads on March 8 and 9, 1862. Tyson has concentrated just about everything that can be found on the battle, and the participants, at one convenient site.
Confederate Navy Electronic Card Indexes.
Part of the Library of Virginia Home Page, this site includes scans of the card collection at that facility, showing the service details of many Confederate Navy personnel from that state. These cards were compiled early in the 20th century by Captain W. MacElroy, Navy Department, United Confederate Veterans. It is not a comprehensive list, but much information on the sailors can be found.
When Liverpool was Dixie.
This English site, created by Roy Rawlinson of Southport, England, includes much on the activites of the Confederate agents operating in England during the war, and also articles on some of the vessels built there.
Ironclads and Blockade Runners of the American Civil War.
Mark F. Jenkins has compiled a number of pages relating to the commanders, personnel and vessels which made up the ironclad forces during the war, and compiled material relating to blockade running activites.

Ken Jones' index consists of links to numerous sites dedicated to both the Union and Confederate Navies. The two Naval forces are on separate pages, and there are links to pages of articles, images and rosters.
Confederate Site of America.
Everything Confederate, and more. Alan Williams' site is a labor of love, and has been since 1998.
USS Harvest Moon.
Sponsored by the Harvest Moon Historical Society, of Wilmington, Delaware, Walter E. Smith's excellent site includes much material relating to the vessel, and her destruction in the final months of the war. The site includes transcriptions from the log, a list of personnel aboard the vessel at the time of her destruction, the court of inquiry report, and other interesting facts.
California Naval History: The Pacific Squadron of 1861-1866.
Part of the California Military Museum's Website, this page is a reprint of one of the articles from a book by Aurora Hunt detailing the Civil War operations of the Pacific Squadron of Lincoln's Navy.
Handbook of Texas Online: William Herbert Beazley.
William Herbert Beazley was a Galveston pilot, who operated the dispatch boat Fanny Morgan, in a civilian capacity, and assisted naval commander Hunter, in the operations around Galveston. In late 1862, he was appointed into the Confederate States Navy, as captain's clerk, but resigned his appointment in early 1863. The Texas State Historical Association web site includes this biographical article on Beazley, written by Howard N. Martin, which sheds some light on this Confederate Naval officer, who is not included in the CSN Officers' Register.
CSS Alabama - Crew of the British Isles.
This particular site is part of the American Civil War Round Table (United Kingdom), and includes biographical information collected by researcher Maurice Rigby, relating to those British sailors who had served aboard this Confederate cruiser.
Cautionary Notice: Recent research indicates that there are numerous errors at one particular web page on this site, relating to CSN officer Clarence Randolph Yonge, and other pages should thus be approached with caution.
USS Cairo Gunboat and Museum.
Site administered by the Vicksburg National Military Park, and edited by G. Zeman. Includes a history of this vessel which was destroyed by a torpedo, as well as an excellent crew list, which includes, besides the sailor's name and rating, his nativity and other such interesting data.
Muster Roll of the Confederate Steam Boat "Spray."
Ron Thompson has reproduced the existing Muster Rolls of this Confederate Naval vessel, which operated around the St. Mark's, Florida, region. Like the majority of existing Confederate Naval Muster Rolls, the amount of data is quite sparse, and here, only includes name, rating, as well as date and place of enlistment on the vessel.
Descendants of Michael Alanson Brendel.
Although not a Civil War Naval web site, in the strict sense of the term, I have purposely included this site amongst my links to show the proliferation of genealogical web sites on the Internet that could assist one in research on the Naval veterans of the Civil War. This one relates to a Confederate sailor (and his subsequent offspring) who had previously served in a North Carolina unit, but was later transferred, like a large number of Confederate Army personnel, into Naval service.
U.S Navy - Vermont in the Civil War.
This is a section of the Vermont in the Civil War web site showing that state's contribution to the Union Navy effort. Sub-sections include lists of officers, volunteers and substitutes who served in the Navy. The site is administered by Tom Ledoux.

Legend of a headless ghost roaming around the Sabine Pass battlefield area, based on the death of one of the gunners aboard the USS Clifton, during the battle of September 8, 1863. A well written article by local historian, William T. Block.
The Story of A Medal of Honor Winner: Charles Melville - U.S. Navy.
Richard D. Longo, Historian of the Rochester Historical Society, New Hampshire, has compiled this biography of a Union Navy sailor who distinguished himself in combat.

Fort McAllister.
This site, administered by Danny Brown, includes much information on the role of the fort during the Civil War. It also includes a muster roll of the CSS Nashville, compiled from the log of the vessel and letters of the crew.
53rd Pennsylvania Volunteers and Veterans of the American Civil War Buried in Canada.
Dan Doyle's site indicates that over 60,000 British North Americans (Canadians) served in the services of both the North and South, and as such, made a significant contribution. His web site is dedicated to his great grandfather, Stephen Hadfield, who served in company I of the 53rd.
