Personal History: Morgan was born and raised in Devon, England until age 15, at which time his father, a young engineer in Starfleet, was assigned to duty at Starfleet R&D as part of the project to create a Federation holodeck. The project was based at least partially on technological information gained over a century ago from a reclusive species known as the Xyrillians in an encounter with the first Starfleet starship Enterprise.
Morgan was an only child, and his mother devoted much of her time to see that her son received the proper upbringing, academically, athletically and socially. His father had been on deep space duties until Morgan was 15, but during all his shore leaves on Earth he had spent as much time as possible with Morgan, regaling him with tales of adventure and heroism in Starfleet.
From the time he was a small child Morgan had known he wanted to join Starfleet and see the galaxy firsthand, and focused his studies into enrolling in the Academy. He was easily accepted and was a very popular and high achieving student. With his natural talent with languages he decided on a career in Communications, with a minor in General Sciences. Near the end of Morgan’s third year at Starfleet Academy, he was involved with a group of upperclassmen in playing what he thought was a harmless prank on another classmate, involving that classmate’s project for subspace mechanics lab. The project was more advanced than they thought, and as a result of their tampering the equipment exploded, injuring several cadets including one of the judges, an admiral. Morgan was one of the few people who came forward voluntarily as a part of the prank, and as a result he was expelled from Starfleet Academy.
Because of his honesty he was allowed to enlist and complete his training to graduate as an NCO. His expulsion from the Academy meant he started his service with a black mark on his record, and the only ship that would give him a posting was as general support staff for Captain Alistair Stuart of the USS Ganymede.
The Ganymede was a small, older Oberth-class ship whose captain was an old friend of Morgan’s father. Despite this setback Morgan was determined to succeed. Overcoming his history he became a very popular crewmember with a reputation for hard work and honesty, and was assigned as a bridge relief officer. During an exploratory mission to uncharted space in the Beta Quadrant Orion pirates attacked the ship. The Ganymede was damaged and several bridge officers were injured. Morgan used his skill at communications to fake an incoming message from an Excelsior-class ship, allowing the XO, Lieutenant Commander Mark Jameson, to bluff the pirates and scare them off. For his quick thinking Morgan received a promotion and made the Communications mate.
When the XO was given a command of his own he requested Morgan to join him as his yeoman, which Morgan readily accepted. While serving aboard the Constellation-class USS Gettysburg Morgan met and eventually married the Assistant Chief Science Officer, Amanda Thompson.
When they finally married they decided to raise a family together, which at the time meant relocating to a planetary or starbase assignment since no families were allowed on starships then. Amanda took a teaching position at Starfleet Academy and Morgan transferred to Starfleet Headquarters as an administrative aide. Morgan eventually worked his way up to becoming the chief administrative assistant to Admiral Noah, the Commander in Chief of Starfleet.
After Admiral Noah retired, Morgan transferred to work as an instructor at Starfleet Academy. During his several years there he also took several classes he had neglected during his earlier time there, including an archaeology course with Dr. Richard Galen. After five years at the academy and a promotion to Master Chief Petty Officer, Morgan found that he desired what he thought would be one last tour of duty in deep space. He was assigned as Chief of Operations to a communications relay, which ended up being a rather tedious tour of duty. After his tour was up he decided to retire from Starfleet into civilian life at age 57. During the next several years Morgan worked as a computer technician and contractor, as well as dabbling in local politics. He was very involved in his children’s lives and after they had all left home he spent time traveling with his wife. Ironically only one of his three children joined Starfleet, the youngest Brice who joined the marines.
In the late 2360s Morgan’s wife’s health began declining, and she finally passed away in 2373 with Morgan and most of the family at her bedside. After mourning her passing, Morgan found that civilian life no longer held any interest for him, but that life back in Starfleet did. Recalling an open-ended offer that Admiral Noah had made Morgan when Morgan worked for him, Morgan returned to Starfleet Academy to complete his officer’s training and to refresh his out-of-date skills.
During this time tragedy struck again, as Morgan’s son died in battle during the brief time of conflict with the Klingon Empire. Morgan does not hold any Klingon personally responsible, but does hold a general disdain for Klingon ideologies and sense of honor from this experience.
Finally in late 2377 Morgan graduated from the Academy, 54 years after he originally would have had he not been dismissed, as a Warrant Officer and was assigned to the USS Casey. After a short tour of duty there, he was offered and readily accepted the position as assistant director of Tango Fleet Science Corps, and in 2379 was promoted to Director.
