Monica F. Helms President

Transgender American Veterans Association

2041 Hutton Drive

Grayson GA 30017

 January 12, 2004

Dear Ms. Helms.

The Service members Legal Defence Network supports the 2003 Transgender Veterans March to the Wall, and commends the efforts of the Transgender American Veterans Association's advocacy on behalf of transgender veterans and service members.

As a national, non-profit legal services, watchdog and policy organization dedicated to ending discrimination against and harassment of military personnel affected by "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and related forms of intolerance, SLDN recognizes the difficulties transgender service members and veterans face. Transgender veterans have served valiantly in all branches of the Armed Forces and in every military conflict, yet they face discrimination in many aspects of American life, including employment, housing, public accommodations and access to healthcare and veterans benefits.

SLDN stands firmly behind the Transgender American Veterans Association (TAVA) in this effort to recognize the sacrifices made by transgender veterans in defence of our nation. We thank all transgender veterans and service members for their service on behalf of our country, and look forward to the day when transgender veterans are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

Sincerely,

C. Dixon Osburn

Executive Director
