Ok, this whole thing might sound crazy so just bare with me.The idea here is to create a "Lead Sled" like vehicle based on a late model car. Right now I dont have the time or money to spend on building an old hot rod, where I would have to upgrade the engine, suspension, brakes, transmission, and interior. With this car I wont have to do all those things, but I still will have a very driveable car, that will hopefully look as cool as an old Merc, (within reason).
I am planning on chopping the top 4" in front, 3" in the rear to give the top a nice rake. The rear window will be leaned in to take up for the lower roof line, but keeping the factory size of the rear window and letting the rear window defogger remain intact. Right now the car sits pretty high, so I will probably cut a few coils to lower the car and give it a little firmer ride. I am also thinking about putting in new tail lights, door handles, and making the interior look nicer, recover the door panels, paint out the wood grain pieces on the dash and doors. I will also be doing a little engine work, perhaps port the head/intake, throw in a hotter cam, maybe even a turbo sometime later.
I have talked with quite a few people about this project, most say I am crazy, and said I couldnt do it. Well, I will show them..
Challenges:
This is a uni-body car, so when I cut the roof off, there will be no structure to hold the car straight. So I will have to support and reinforce the body before I cut off the roof.Of course cutting the glass will be fun, but I think I have that figured out.
Oh yeah, did I mention I am doing this in a very small single car garage under my apartment??
