Truth Hiders and Hoarders

N. often writes of his firm conviction that God has only one church and his concern why there are so many divisions, factions and fractures in today's church. I believe the answer to this dilemma lies in Rev. 2:1-3:22 in the letters to the seven churches. All believed they were doing God's will. All but Sardis were commended for some virtue - works, patience, faithfulness, charity, service and suffering. Sadly these commendations are greatly overshadowed by the rebukes for faults and toleration of error.
Ephesus - the church of departed love. So involved in trying to make their Paradise here on earth through zeal and activity, soundness of doctrine, discipline and practice that they let their first love for Jesus Christ decline and grow cold. Called to repentance.
Smyrna - the church of fiery persecution. Persecuted and robbed of goods by men who tried to dilute the grace of God with legalism and ceremonialism. Called to be faithful unto death.
Peregamos - the church of worldly alliance. Union of church and state for public glory wrought havoc. To win converts many pagan rites and festivals were adopted as parts of worship. Deteriorated to embracing the doctrine of the Nicalatians, which the church at Ephesus and God hated. Called to repentance.
Thyatira - the church of clerical domination. Promoted continual sacrifice, self proclaimed prophets (Jezebels) claiming infallibility in setting forth doctrine and new revelation from God; led people to follow man's authority. Will not repent and will be joined with all systems of religious evil of the world. The godly can only hold fast 'til He comes.
Sardis - the church of empty profession. Result of union of church and state, in need of reform. The Reformation was of God, the resulting Ecclesiastical systems were of man. Called to repentance.
Philadelphia - the church of the faithful remnant. No reproof, obedience and no apostasy. Faithfulness will be rewarded by being kept from Tribulation Period.
Laodicea - the church of insipid lukewarmness. People demanding their rights, democracy bordering on anarchy. Will be spewed out. Called to repentance.
Seven is the number of completion and therein lies the answer. It's all there - a complete picture of today's church. We've got it all - good, bad and indifferent!
As each of the seven letters end, so do I, "He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches".
Have a good week!
