Pattaya lies 150km to the south east of Bangkok. It is about 2 hours drive by road, and it stretches for some 15km along the Easten coast. In the 60s Pattaya was just a little fishing Village, that was untill the U.S.A. sent soldiers to build the air base at U-Tapao. So many of them took to spending their leisure time and money in Pattaya. Then the Vietnam war saw what was the start of Pattaya's international reputation as it was used as a offical R&R centre for the U.S forces. Of course the Thai's in the area were quick to spot the business opportunities. So soon girlie bars hotels and guest house's began to spring up to service them. Now Pattaya rightfully enjoys the reputation of the sex&sand capital of Asia, and really for that matter the world. Well what can I say about Pattaya beach, it's long, and that you can walk from one end to the other, but the beach is dirty and hardly picturesque, smells at times as the sewerage pumps out all the refuse from Pattaya into it. But they are now trying to put it right, but when who knows ?? Over the hill from Pattaya is Jomtien beach it is a little better, it use to be quiet but now it's getting the same as Pattaya more hotels and girlie bars going up all the time. Getting around Jomtien and Pattaya is relatively easy as you can just flag down one of the baht buses for the cost of 10baht around Pattaya but it's a bit more to Jomtien etc. Things are very competitive in Pattaya and of course this contributes towards keeping down the cost of accommodation, and for that matter about every thing else. The restaurants in Pattaya are both well priced and serve good food.I always eat down at Thumbs Up or The Sportsman for English food, for the Thai food the Boat bakery or the Kiss chain, but you will always find a good one in Pattaya for your own taste. It is the same for shopping there are small markets for you to go around and barter, also there are many vendors, but they can be annoying trying to sell you stuff on the beach and in the bars. There are at least 5 big shopping centres in Pattaya, the Royal Plaza, Big C, [these two have cinema's showing English and Thai films] Tops, Mikes, and Lotus, also a big market called Made in Thailand on the 2rd road. |
