Prince Mongkut, the brother of King Phra Nangklao, was a founder of Dhammayuth, a new monastic order of the Theravada Buddhism in Siam.

During the time as a monk Prince Mongkut studied foreign affairs as well as medern Western Sciences which he learnt from Catholic monks and missionaries.

When King Mongkut (King Rama IV) ascended the throne he appointed his brother Prince Chudhamanee to be the Second King.

Canals around Bangkok were widened to allow boats and jjunk ships to use the waterways easily. Phadung Krung Kasem Canal became an important area for trade.

The "Bhoonsombat" and "Sawasdisre" families extended their residential grounds along the riverside. They became traders in wood panels and poles with shops situated by Nang Lerng Bridge.

The river and canals became the life line for the people as floating markets increased in numbers.

The grand royal barge procession on the river were strikingly beautiful. Oarsmen chanted in unison under bright sunshine.

The Thais cleverly expanded diplomatic relations and adapted themselves accordingly. The King himself spoke foreign languanes.
