The nation maintained peace due to King Chulalongkorn's ability. He became the saveour averting Siam's colonization by the West and when he passed away the people mourned in great sorrow.

Crown Prince Vajiravadh succeeded to the throne. As part of the modernization programme, he founded academic institutions sush as the Royal Page School and Chulalongkorn University.

Learned in literature, linguistics, and culture, the King was the author of numerous books.

By understanding the Western ways, the King introduced new administrative ideas into the old regime, paving ways for democracy.

Siam joined the Allied forces and entered World War I. Consequently, the flag with the elephant as emblem was altered to a tricolour. After the war, the Western countries gave up their Extra-Territorial Rights. The Thai people won back  their pride and honour.

Nationalistic programmes were designed to arouse patriotism such as the introduction of Thai boy scouts. The "Phoonsombat" and "Sawasdisri" families were most enthusiastic with such innovation.
