Candle Festival

The commencement of Phansa, or the Buddhist Rain Retreat (Known in Thai as Khao Phansa) is
observed in the northeastern province city of Ubon Ratchathani with this lovely festival
that displays artistic skills as well as piety. The event this year includes the biggest
candle in the world, the beauty contest, the phalaeng I-san style dinner and various folk
entertainment. Beautifully carved beeswax candles, some of them several meters tall, are
exhibited in colorful parades before being presented to local temples. |

This significant event for Buddhists marks the day on which the Lord Buddha, delivered is
first sermon to his first five disciples. With the first sermon and the ordination of
Kondanna as the first Buddhist monk, starting the Order of Sangha, the Triple Germs of
Buddhism came into being. They comprise the Lord Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Sangha. On
this day, Buddhists perform merit-making and attend sermons. In the evening, they join
candle procession. |
