1. NEW RESEARCH IN THE ART AND ARCHAEOLOGY OF BURMA

hosted by The British Museum, was held at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London on 17-18 June 2000. Papers presented on archaeological topics include: Elizabeth Moore, Defining Mynamar Prehistory: Settlement in the Chindwin and Samon River Regions; Bob Hudson, Recent Archaeological Discoveries at Pagan; and John Guy, Early Burmese Sculpture.

2. NEW RESEARCH IN THE ART AND ARCHAEOLOGY OF BURMA, THEORY BUILDING IN ARCHAEOLOGY: ANTHROPOLOGICAL INSIGHTS FROM SOUTHEAST ASIA

was held at the 66th Annual Meeting of the Society for American Archaeology, 16-22 April in New Orleans, USA. Organized by Elisabeth A. Bacus and Peter Grave, the symposium included the following participants and presented papers: M. Stark, Global Theory vs. Local Knowledge in Explaining Emergent Complexity in Southeast Asia; E. Bacus, Southeast Asian Political Theory and Island Polities: Local Insights on Theories of Complex Society; J. Schoenfelder, A Perspective from the Paddies: Tracing the Co-Evolution of Balinese Institutions; P. Grave, State Development in Early Modern Thailand; P. Lape, Theoretical Insights from Studies of Culture Contact in Eastern Indonesia.

3. THE FIFTH WORLD ARCHAEOLOGICAL CONGRESS (WAC-5)
