The first Thai kingdom was Sukhothai in 13th -15th centuries. It is remembered as much for its art and architecture as for its political achievements.

Sukhothai's cultural importance in Thai history also derives from the fact that the Thai script evolved into a definite from during King Ramkhamhaeng's time.
