Future leaders speak out at EU-Thailand Debate Competition
University students from around the country will lock horns in intellectual combat at the 2 nd EU-Thailand National Intervarsity Debate Championship 2006 from 4-6 February. Following on from the success of last year's event, some 50 teams from 17 universities will compete in three day's of debating. Every region of Thailand will be represented as teams seek to emulate the success of current champions, Mahidol International College . Among the newcomers to the competition are Khon Kaen University , Burapha University International College , Prince of Songkla University, Thepsatri Rajabhat University , Chiang Mai University and Eastern Asia University . “This year's debate is very special. We have almost 200 debaters from around the country taking part. This not only shows that Thai students are more active in public speaking, but also that they are increasingly keen on expressing their views on a wide-range of social, economic and international issues,” said Tournament Director Nont Armarttasn. The EU-Thailand National Intervarsity Debate Championship is an English debate competition organised by Thammasat Speakers' Union with the support of the Delegation of the European Commission, the EU Member State Embassies and the European private sector. The event aims to support the culture of debate which is a crucial element of democratic society. It also aims to encourage university students to develop the skills that are vital in professional careers. These include the ability to structure, develop and deliver one's thought in a persuasive way, the capability to gain knowledge of a wide range of topics, the confidence to speak in front of the public, and the flexibility to react quickly to new ideas and crises. Ambassador-Head of the Delegation of the European Commission Dr Friedrich Hamburger said, “Debate helps us explain complex ideas in a quick and effective manner and enhances the critical thinking abilities essential for efficient participation in today's highly competitive world. It would therefore not be surprising if those who take part in this event go on to enjoy considerable future success in their chosen fields. ” The grand final of the 2 nd EU-Thailand National Intervarsity Debate Championship 2006 will be held on Monday 6 th February at 13.30 – 16.30 at Sriburapa Conference Hall, Small Auditorium of Thammasat University, Tha Pra Chan.
