New Music News 1/26/01 |
1/26/01-Oh my god...Oh my God...major fucking news flash! As I rumbled through the WSKB mail pile, I notice a package from the fine folks at Spitfire Records. For the hell of it, I opened it only to have my jaw drop in utter shock. Could this be true? Could we honestly be getting a CD from the band that I thought was the fucking bomb as a kid? As soon as I saw the bumper sticker (which is currently on my car) that accompanied it I knew that this was not false event. My friends...I have in my possession...the Brand New Britny Fox Long Way To Live CD!!! |

Godammit stop laughing this is serious business! One of my most favorite bands of the 80s was Britny Fox. Granted I can accept the fact that many people think that this band is the bi-product of Cinderella. Still, I can recall running around my cellar playing air guitar to their first self-titled release. I really don't remember picking up any of their later release but that first one is still in my tape collection and has been used over and over again! The band, once fronted by "Dizzy" Dean Davidson, pumped out several releases and had their ups and downs in the 80s and 90s. Now they are back again (finally) with the new lead singer Tommy Paris. Guitarist Michael Kelly Smith, Drummer Johnny Dee, and Bassist Billy Childs have returned as well to rock into the millenium...live style! |

The CD starts off with the song Six Guns Loaded which has a voice sample from Dirty Harry. (Do ya feel lucky punk) This leads to the hella fun track which is a pure pumpin' 80s bad ass attitude fest. This of corse leads to that damn song that fucking rocks the world man...Long Way To Love! I can even remember the video to that song...the band playing in a junk yard rockin' the shit out of the place. After five minutes of this one can easily understand why this band fucking rocks! The track Dream On has a bit of an accoustic feel to it which is rather mellowing. Paris leads the band in a great blend of melodic vocals and catchy lyrics. |
The band usually keeps to the themes of chicks and the tough guy image with songs like Closer To Your Love and Louder. All the while, front man Paris keeps the crowd going between song interludes by asking all "the mother fuckers" in the crowd how they're doing and thanking them for "COMING OUT". In one interlude, master guitarist Michael Kelly Smith rock out for the an instrumental simply called Guitar Solo. This leads to the "don't fuck around with me track I'm a tough 80s metal icon" song Shot From My Gun. The song Over + Out leads the crowd in a big sing along as bassit Billy Childs takes on an accoustic guitar for a change. The crowd pleaser Girlschool is virtually saved until the end of the CD which I'm sure made many Britny Fox fans leave with a smile. There it is folks...my take on the new CD from Britny Fox. The only reason I am so enthusiastic behind this CD is because they were one of my favorite bands of the 80s. Granted I can admit now that a lot of what they did sucked but still the bands stands for rock n' roll and can still keep up with best of them. So if you like that 80s style combined with the raspy vocals of front man Paris this one is definately for you. Its a pure whammy bar filled rock and roll fest which will bring back the days of big hair and pants that would crush your balls until they are one dimensional. Rock on dammit! |

1-26-01-Random News Well things are really starting to pop over at WSKB. We have our first meeting on January 29, 2001 for all promising DJs. We should be back on the air a week after that date so mark your calenders now! The station will be electing a new Hip-Hop director cuz frankly...I'm tired of filling in now and then as the makeshift one! The new group Saliva seems to be very tight sounding. Watch for them VERY soon to be breaking on major stations. I'm hoping that they get a big push from our DJs this semester at WSKB. We recently received a three song sampler with the songs Your Disease (which I belive appears on the Drac 2000 soundtrack), After Me, and my personal favorite the rockin' Lackluster. They remind me a lot of the band Boiler Room here and there but have moreof a fresher sound. They provide a great mix of gloomy yet pick you up music which is bound to rock people everywhere! I was thinking of posting the new Godhead as the CD review of the week but Britny Fox (of corse) beat them out by a narrow margain! I am diggin' that new disc though. Even though the band looks like Marilyn Manson had a love child, I couldn't help but notice |

that the lead singer did sound a lot like the shock rocker himself. Manson does appear with Twiggy on Break You Down. Regardless though, this band can not be labled as a wanna-be because they seriously havea sound that is all their own. The best tracks are found right in the beginning and at the end. The Hollow (which appears on the Blair Witch Soundtrack 2) begins the CD with it's deathpopish sound. Its a great track but I'm quickly taking a liking for the smooth sound for the 2nd track |
I Sell Society. Its a hella fun track filled with sarcasm lyrics and cool mocking rythms. I wont give the rest of the CD away but I will say that if you like the new wave of industrial thats come out recently check this one out! The new Annihilator isn't bad but it sounds like they are kinda branching off in different directions instead of sticking with the standard thrash format. Good news or bad news... kinda hard to tell right now. Tracks 1 and 3 will supply with some thrashin' fun though. The last couple tracks are rockin' as well! What the fuck is going on with all these damn singles! I love when people send us a full length then the single. I alone did about 10 reviews today for one song on one disc. Oh well new music is good music (once in awhile). Among them was the new Monster Magnet, who is due out for a new CD real soon, single Heads Explode. Sounding very Monster Magnet (ish) if you ask me! Also, check out the new Valentine Soundtrack...it has a great selection of music ranging from techno to rock with rare B-Sides from Static-X, Filter, and Rob Zombie to name a few. I'm sure the soundtrack will do better than the movie. But you know what I say...any movie with Denise Richards is worth seeing just cuz of her! We did receive the new Boy Hits Car In and I breifly checked it out. They do sound pretty damn good from what I did hear. I will give you a better review on it next week. Well I'm out so take it easy all...later! |
