This particular story begins at 104.9 Xfm, where on Sunday mornings, Jimmy Carr and Iain Morris present a shambolic radio show.
The term originally came into use as a name for Gorillaz, where in GQ magazine the band was described as Damon Albarns 'hip-hop Banana Splits', however later, on the 17th of July 2005, it was adopted as the name for Jimmy Carr and Iain Morris's 'band'.

Hip Hop Banana Splits comprises comedian Jimmy Carr and Iain Morris.
That's Jimmy Carr. He has wings "Like a sanitary towel".
That's Iain Morris. He has a tail. Since he compared Jimmy's super power to a feminine hygiene product, I thought I'd do the same to him. I haven't got a clue what he looks like; I created this from a Look Around You screencap that I think was him.. Yes, I did screw up the hair.
