This is not really a column, just a collection of the updates I made to the various character pages based on the events of WOW show #20 (aired here on 2/18/01).
The Asian Invasion:
Jade took the "dissatisfaction" angle to the WOW message board,
sulking about her record and complaining about WOW management. So apparently,
this is gonna be a real angle and not one of those red herrings. It'd be easy
for them to turn her heel using this angle, but I hope they don't go that
route. Anyway, you can't turn someone heel in WOW by having them complain
about McLane.
David McLane:
McLane continues to sound like an 8-year-old overenthusiastic WOW fan. Some
great quotes this week:
"Maybe Jungle Grrrl is trying to defeat Jane Blond so she
can be the Queen of England? We'll find out."
On the JG/Beckie PPV match: "They were fighting for the title of Queen
of the Jungle Grrrl."
"Riot took out Danger...now she's a dangerous riot."
Strangely enough, his "post-PPV" interview with Terri Gold was understated and effective.
The Daughters of Darkness:
Nope, they are back. And get this...they got a title shot. For losing
to the Beach Patrol, they get a title shot? Makes absolutely zero sense. Now
that I've seen the PPV (thanks, Phil), I can say they're definitely not Law
& Order, though. The Goon's mask actually fell off this week, revealing
it to be one of those things with a rubber band you put around your head.
Then he got his ass kicked. I wish I could say something nice about this gimmick.
It just really stinks.
Lana Star:
Lana took on Randi Rah Rah and lost. Although Lana still can't wrestle, I
liked the persona she projected in the ring. She makes a good "I can't
believe this person is hitting the great Lana Star" face. And her cowardly
running out of the ring (and mocking of Randi as she did it) was fun. As I
discussed above, I think it's smart for them to play her storylines out through
wrestling matches, as they did here, as opposed to having a million interviews
and clips.
Law and Order:
Lotus said on the WOW message board that L&O are not anyone repackaged,
but are "new girls." Lotus doesn't have that much incentive to lie
about this, but then again, she doesn't have that much incentive to tell the
truth about it either, so who knows?
Patti Pizzazz:
In the Lana/Randi wrestling match/battle for Patti's affections, Patti did
try to help Lana, but failed, provoking Lana's anger. So perhaps Lana will
be the one doing the dumping.
Riot:
Riot injured Danger's leg in an out-of-ring confrontation. It looked cheesy.
It looked very much like the "they broke my leg" Selina Majors angle,
which as we know failed. I don't think they needed to overdramaticize this
conflict. It's enough that they're fighting for the title and putting each
other through tables. I felt that the feud lost a lot of heat this week.
Roxy Powers:
A "strap match" with Slam was set up, resulting in Roxy having
to do a good amount of mic work. Her voice kept breaking, which didn't exactly
make her seem tough. Get her a powerful lozenge!
Slam Dunk:
Slam had some great mic work this week, and bump-addict referee Josh Milton
gave her her best chokeslam yet. She fights Roxy in a strap match next week.
