Painting Analysis Worksheet

Step 1. Observation
A. Study the photograph for 2 minutes. Form an overall impression of the photograph and then examine individual items. Next, divide the photo into quadrants and study each section to see what new details become visible.

B. What is the main object in the painting, what story is it trying to tell?

C. What are the main colors used in the painting?

D. Are any there any symbolic images in the painting?

E. Use the chart below to list people, objects, and activities in the painting.

Step 2. Inference
A. Based on what you have observed above, what story is this painting trying to tell?

B. What themes are present in the painting?

C. Is there a message in the painting?  If so, what is that message?

A. What questions does this painting raise in your mind?

B. Where could you find answers to them?
