What to Do If Your Child Is Missing

STAY CALM. It is so easy to lose one’s head in this situation. But you mustn’t. It is mandatory that you remain calm so that you can think.

Call where you think your child SHOULD be.

Call where you think your child MIGHT be.

Call your spouse.

Call the police. If the child is not found promptly, be sure they file a missing child report with the FBI. If they refuse to do this, DO IT YOURSELF. (This was made possible by the passage of the Missing Children’s Act of the United States on September 30, 1982.)

Do not be surprised if the police investigate parents, friends, relatives. It is common procedure, and no one is above suspicion.

Call any friends or relatives who you think might be able to help.

Organize a search party.

Call the organizations listed on the Personal Safety Resource page. They know what you’re going through and may be able to help.

Call the Child Find and the Missing Children Help Center to have your child listed in a central computer for tracking.

Visit the website for the Center for Missing and Exploited Children (see the banner below).

Put up posters around the community.

Eventually, if needed, join a support group.

Advertise in out-of-town newspapers, and on TV, especially if you think an ex-spouse may have abducted the child.
