A 32x Exclusive. Golf Magazine Presents 36 Great Holes Starring Fred Couples is the only golf simulation available for the 32x, as well as the game with the world's longest title. 36 Great Holes isn't a bad golf simulation, though it isn't quite up to par with many of the 3DO golf titles that came out during the same time period in a seemingly endless parade. If you're a golf fan, you'll recognize many of the available courses, including Doral, Kiawah, Firestone, Harbour Town, and many others. You can choose to either play as Fred Couples or "build" your own player, choosing gender and appearance. You can even coordinate your character's outfit with different colored shirts and shorts. This whole part of the game is rather silly, but some players might like the option of personalizing their own characters (the cartridge will save the appearance and statistics of up to 24 players.) Play modes include tournament, practice, match and stroke play, shoot-out, skins, and scramble. Sand traps and water hazards appear frequently, and the challenge can be high for golfing newbies. The rendered scenery is generally bland and unattractive, though the increased color palate and scaling capabilities of the 32x do appear to be utilized somewhat. The soundtrack is pretty much what you'd expect from a mediocre golf title... bland keyboard tunes, the whack and thud of golf balls, the sounds of nature, and an irritating commentator, all of which can be turned off in the option screen. If you like golf and the 32x is you best hardware, then 36 Great Holes might be the game for you. Otherwise, stick to one of the other 32x sports titles, like NBA Jam or World Series Baseball.

A CD version of 32 Great Holes was planned that contained additional courses and added features. It would have been nice to have a decent 32x CD game!

Virtual Golf was far along in the development cycle when the 32x went belly-up. Footage of Virtual Golf appeared in the Virtua Fighting Training Video, and this image was taken off an instruction manual advertising future releases. No alphas of this game have surfaced as of yet.
