Capcom's Resident
Evil has been credited with the invention of the "Survival Horror"
gaming concept, but the genre's roots can be traced back several years
earlier to the PC's Alone in the Dark
series. Both games are eerily similar, right down to the creepy mansion,
murderous monsters, limited camera angles, and polygonal models. The 32x
was scheduled to receive a port of the PC original, a processing task it
could have probably handled easily due to the game's simple 3-D graphics
and unpolished look. Unfortunately,
Alone in the Dark fell
victim to the curse of the canceled 32x game, leaving the little add-on
without a single horror game in its library (though
Cosmic Carnage
and Motocross Championship come close.) Both Alone
in the Dark and its sequel Alone in the Dark 2: One-Eyed
Jack's Revenge were released for the 3DO and are probably comparable
to what the 32x could have accomplished.
