Capcom's Darkstalkers fighting series has enjoyed massive popularity in Japan, but success has been elusive in the United States. This is puzzling, as the game's combination of the classic Street Fighter 2 fighting engine with bizarre fighters based on classic horror characters is an entertaining and refreshing departure from more conventional fighting games. Darkstalkers would have been the third 2-D Capcom fighter for the 32x (Street Fighter: The Movie and Super Street Fighter 2 were also announced) but it was canceled along with the others, leaving the 32x library devoid of a Capcom fighting game.
Darkstalkers
was later released for the Playstation, while the sequel Night Warriors
appeared on the Saturn. The third game in the sequel, Vampire Savior
(Darkstalkers 3 in the States), was released for both the
PSX and the Saturn. A pseudo-compilation CD called Vampire Chronicle
appeared for the Japanese Dreamcast.
