The original Dragon's Lair appeared on the struggling Sega CD console, and its sequel was scheduled for release on the Sega 32x CD. Like all of the released 32x CD's, the 32x port of Dragon's Lair 2: Time Warp wouldn't have presented much of a programming challenge, requiring only a bit of enhancements to take advantage of the better hardware. The traditionally dull "push the joystick, press the button" gameplay of Don Bluth's cartoon games is even less interactive than the average 32x CD title, but this historically important game would have nevertheless made an interesting addition to the sad 32x CD library. It was cancelled in the face of dismal 32x CD sales.

The original Dragon's Lair game was a true arcade sensation, combining video game elements with Disney-quality animation. Unfortunately, the gameplay was quite different from traditional arcade games and the laser disk format yielded no more real hits (Space Ace, while widely distributed, was not very popular.) In late 1983, work begun on Dragon's Lair 2, but was halted in March of 1984. Through the years, Don Bluth and his production team continued work on the sequel until it was finally completed in the late eighties. In late 1991, Sullivan Bluth Productions was ready to put Dragon's Lair 2 in the arcades. Manufactured by the Leland Corporation, the sequel used the latest technology and a more reliable laser disc player that the original, which was prone to regular breakage.

Dragon's Lair and its various sequels (including a few generic 2-D platformers bearing the Dragon's Lair license) appeared on a variety of platforms, including the Colecovision, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, 3DO, CD-i, Playstation 2, and numerous computer formats.
