Machinery started out as a Genesis game called Nitro
Wreaks. Developer Scavenger decided to upgrade their 3-D combat
racer up to 32-bit and take advantage of the advanced scaling capabilities
and substantially larger color palate that the more powerful 32x hardware
could provide. According to a magazine preview of a nearly complete test
version, the game was to consist of nine missions through many types of
locales, weather, and road conditions. Enemy vehicles would attack you
and attempt to block your path, while helicopters and planes fired on you
from above. Your mission was to destroy as many enemies as possible with
your weaponry, as well as make it to the next checkpoint within the required
time. Hazards and power-ups littered your path, creating an obstacle course
that was said to really effect the gameplay. The graphics seem to have
been really incredible for a 32x title... the introduction and vehicle
select screens were evidently very impressive, with rotating polygonal
vehicle models. Heavy Machinery utilized a combination of
polygons, sprites, and scaling effects to achieve its 3-D imagery and was
said to feature a smooth frame rate, little slowdown, and responsive controls.
Heavy Machinery was close to completion, but no one picked
up the game for release due to the waning 32x market.
